MAXWELL, Millicent Irene (nee Wycherley) February 28, 1926 - December 1, 2007
Life is like a piano what you get out of it depends on how you play it. Mom passed away at St. Ann's Home, following a short battle with cancer.
She leaves to mourn her children, Norrie (Lloyd Miller of Unity), Sandra, Lois (Hugh Elliot) and Howie, all of Saskatoon; grandchildren, Chris Helperl of Lloydminster and Greg (Tracy) Helperl of Killam, AB (children, Shayla, Tyelin and Anson), Carmen (son Hayden), Blaine and Barrett Elliot (Saskatoon) and three stepgrandchildren, Michelle, Lori and Jeff Miller. She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Amelia Wycherly; her beloved husband, Bob in August of 2006; and three brothers, Bus (March 2007), Ron (WWII) and Bobby (in infancy).
Mom was born and raised in Saskatoon. She attended Caswell Hill and Bedford Road schools. She was very musical and had several recordings made of her piano duets. After attending teachers college (Normal School), she was sent to teach at Hopewell, a rural school near Radisson where Dad was farming. Although their first meeting was disastrous, since Dad nearly ran her down with the cultivator on a country road, they ended up marrying in July of 1949.
During the early years, she taught piano to many local students and led the United Church choir. When times got tough on the farm, Mom began twice weekly commutes to Saskatoon where she enjoyed many years of teaching choral singing at a number of public elementary schools. In 1983, Mom and Dad sold the farm and the 'city girl' got to move back to Saskatoon. Mom began doing volunteer work at City Hospital and they enjoyed trips to Europe, Sweden and the USA. Every summer was spent at Emma Lake (usually with grandchildren) where the coffee pot was always on and where Mom's beautiful flower gardens became an inspiration to other cabin owners.
After the loss of her best friend, Joyce (Crocker) Douglas, Mom began to deteriorate. She moved in to St. Ann's Home in the fall of 2003 where she was very well cared for by the wonderful staff and by Meg, the resident dog and her three legged 'smoking buddy'.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Saskatchewan Breast Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Association or the Alzheimer's Society. Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Prairie View Chapel. A private family inurnment will occur at Woodlawn Cemetery.
