NEWSHAM
Ifor (Ivor) Stephens Newsham passed away peacefully on February 14, 2007, surrounded by family, following a short illness.
He was predeceased by his daughter and son-in-law, Shelagh and Steve; his brother, David (Pearl); brother-in-law, Hartley; and his parents, George and Hannah. Ivor leaves behind his loving wife, June (nee Woodworth); his daughter, Kimberley (David); sons, Brice (Delia) and Jamis (Sadie); grandchildren, Daniel, Jesus, Claudia, Saul, Adrian and Wolf; and siblings, Lloyd (Lois), Kathleen (Reece), Margaret, sister-in-law, Pearl and Gwendolyn.
Ivor was born on a farm in Great Deer District in Saskatchewan on July 27, 1930. His family later moved to Saskatoon, where he graduated from Bedford Road. After completing normal school, he began his career as a teacher in several one-room schools in rural Saskatchewan. He later obtained his B.A. and B.Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan, and a library science degree from McGill.
He loved to read, and had the opportunity to share his passion with students by setting up a library in Kamsack and again in North Battleford, where he was the school librarian for many years. He met June, the love of his life, at Third Avenue United Church in North Battleford. Married in 1970, they had 36 happy years together. His children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, could always count on him for support, especially if it involved attending their sporting event. He was the original grammar police and his children inherited his love of language. Ivor was also a longtime supporter of the CCF/ NDP, as well as the United Church.
The Funeral Service will be held at Third Avenue United Church in North Battleford, Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to CNIB or the Diabetes Association. Arrangements are entrusted to the BATTLEFORDS FUNERAL SERVICE.
