On July 28, 2005, his 91st birthday, Jim passed away after a short illness. Jim was born to Joseph and Catherine Bate, in their home, in Saskatoon.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, and his younger brothers, Joseph and George Bate. He is survived by his beloved family, Alice, his wife of 64 years; daughters, Judy (George) Franson and Barbara (John) Mooney; grandchildren, Cheryl (Rick) Leier of Saskatoon, Brent Franson of Regina, Jennifer Mooney of Red Deer, AB, and Glen (Andreanne) Mooney of Brussels, Belgium; and great-grandsons, Michael, Ryan, and Tyler Leier of Saskatoon.

Jim graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate prior to joining the family dry cleaning business, Tucker and Bate (later Bate Brothers). At the outbreak of WWII, he immediately enlisted in the RCN where he served, at sea as a Lieutenant, in the Battle of the Atlantic until the end of hostilities in 1945. On his return to Saskatoon, he rejoined the dry cleaning business until it was sold in 1963. Jim then worked for the Unemployment Insurance Commission in Saskatoon until 1971 and then in Lethbridge where he retired in 1979.

After his retirement, Jim managed the Japanese Gardens in Lethbridge for three years. Jim and Alice returned to Saskatoon in 2000. Jim was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Lethbridge, a life member and Past Master of Sask. Lodge No. 16, and a member of Scottish Rite in Saskatoon. He also served as President of the Saskatoon Cosmopolitan Club for many years. He was a loyal member of All Saints Anglican Church in Saskatoon. Above all, Jim was a loving and honorable family man and friend, an outstanding example for every husband, father and grandfather. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to one's charity of choice. A private family interment service will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Kenneth J.Scheirich of Park Funeral Chapel, 244-2103.
