Flashback
During March 1985, surveys were distributed to 100 CHS students of all different grades and backgrounds. The survey asked such questions as "What was your favorite movie this year?" and "Did you attend any Olympic events?" as well as inviting comments on "the worst fad" and "spare time." the results came in — in some categories, majorities were readily obvious. In others, two or more replies received equal numbers of votes. At any rate, it's been forty years, and we can now look back and see 1985 at a Glance.
Television
Though many students claimed not to watch much T.V., most seemed to be able to mention a favorite show or two. The Cosby Show—a new comedy starring, you guessed it, Bill Cosby—had the largest number of followers. Cheers, a previous fave, was the second most mentioned.
Bad Fads
Deciding on the worst fad of the year was no chore for most students. About 98% of those surveyed insisted that Day-Glo, or neon, clothes were by far the most nauseating trend. Madonna clones were mentioned, with comments like "Ugh!". A few perceptive students said that "going to 7-11 for lunch" was the worst fad.
Elections
If the November elections had been held at Claremont High, the result would have been the same. Ronald Reagan won our March poll with a resounding victory, although several students claimed they didn't like either presidential candidate.
Comedy
Comedy was one of those areas where a favorite emerged right at the beginning. The brilliant Eddie Murphy blew all the competition away and earned the position of "Best comedian" by a landslide.
Eating
CHS students loved to eat, and according to those surveyed, Mexican food was tops. Many claimed that Italian food was best, while others preferred just plain, simple fare like steak or chicken.
Fast Food
Fast food was undoubtedly an American mainstay — who could survive without burgers fries, and shakes? CHS students
preferred In-N-Out to any other chain; McDonalds and Burger King were tied close behind.
Free Time
When asked what they do in their spare time, people responded in a variety of ways. Many enjoyed athletic activities such as sports or hiking, but many also said they used free time to sleep or relax with a book. Several said they enjoyed listening to music. But the majority of students' favorite past-time activity was ... PARTYING!!
Sports
With such a spectacular sports year at Claremont High, choosing a favorite CHS sport was a difficult task. Football came out ahead, but not by much. Soccer was a close second, showing that Claremont students appreciate more than just glamour sports.
Actors
The teen-idol Rob Lowe was chosen by a slim margin over Harrison Ford as the year's favorite actor. Having appeared in such films as The Outsiders, Class, Oxford Blues, and St. Elmo's Fire, Rob Lowe often proved that there was more than good looks to his appeal.
Music
The choice for best song was the hardest to evaluate. Almost every student voted for a different song, but Prince's "Erotic City" managed to pull in several more votes. Some other songs mentioned were "Relax" by Frankie GTH, "Careless Whispers" by George Michaels, "Dancing in the Dark" by Bruce Springsteen, and "Sha La La La" by the Ramones.
Olympics
Because the Olympics were so widely watched last summer, the response was great about favorite Olympic events. Gymnastics drew the most viewers and swimming and track also had a number of fans. To our slight surprise, a great majority of students attended at least one Olympic event. Most were able to be at between one and five events, although some claimed to have attended as many as twelve!
Actresses
For favorite actress, the votes were spread amongst a number of worthy candidates, but Meryl Streep was the clear winner. Judging from the number of ballots left blank in this section, many students must have had trouble thinking of any good actresses.
Flicks
Beverly Hills Cop was an overwhelming choice for favorite film. Eddie Murphy's comic genius and the film's ton packed suspense scenes provided the ingredients for a cinematic feast.
Bands
CHS students had acutely diverse tastes in music, judging from the number of bands mentioned as favorites. The Psychadelic Furs came out on top, with the Talking Heads close behind. Some other bands were the Ramones, U2, Genesis, the Violent Femmes, and General Public.
Studying
Teachers and administrators will be upset to learn that most students only spend between zero and five hours a week studying. While some industrious students claimed to study more than fifteen or twenty hours a week, most of the kids seemed to agree that homework was not the bread and water of high school life.
