Gary Aschim

Birth Date: 1954-09-05
Deceased Date: 2018-04-17
MaryAnn Chick - September 19th, 2024
Obituaries sometimes disappear so …. Gary passed away on April 17, 2018 after a illness. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on September 5, 1954 to Kenneth and Norma Jean Aschim. He graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. On June 23, 1977, he married the love of his life, Barbara Medland. Together they brought into this world, two sons, Eric Garrison Aschim and Evan Garrison Aschim. He loved his sons very much and was proud of them. His career began with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in Kalamazoo, Michigan where he worked to open a group home facility for delinquent youth. His position was eliminated and he found himself working in Charlevoix County as a Child Welfare Worker. His life long and successful career took him to Antrim, Benzie, Leelanau, and Grand Traverse Counties. The one constant is that he was always working in the Child Welfare arena, in particular Children’s Protective Services. Gary was an unsung hero to many children in all of these counties; children who never met him or felt his compassion and empathy for their situations. He strongly believed that children needed to be with their birth families if at all possible. He championed Family Preservation initiatives in the Region that resulted in providing a myriad of services to families to strengthen them and insure that their families would remain intact. In 1999, the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington D.C. recognized Leelanau County DHHS for Gary’s efforts to implement Family Group Decision Making. His efforts were to stop the disproportionate number of Native American children who were entering the Foster Care System. His efforts literally stopped those placements, and led to an initiative that brought together the extended families of Native children and empowered them to develop a plan to insure the safety of their children. Many young Social Workers had the privilege to work under Gary. He called them new babies and encouraged them to forget what they learned in college and to enter the real work of Social Work, a world that allowed for close relationships with the people whom they were serving, often a mentoring relationship. He insisted that his employees understand the culture of Poverty, not as a way to excuse behavior, but as a way to understand. His job was difficult, it was stressful, but Gary believed that the future of the Region’s children depended upon him to do it right. He was a non-bureaucratic bureaucrat. Rules were made to be broken if they negatively impacted the life of a child. He deeply cared about his community and it showed. At the same time, Gary had a wonderful sense of humor. He had no patience for boring meetings and would use levity as a way to say, “I am done.” His motto was “do good”. And that is exactly what he did for 35 years with his career, he “did good”. Gary is survived by his sons, Eric and Evan; his sister Karen (George) Adkins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, special friends Tim Lewis and Mary Marois, and his loving dogs, Loki and Echo. Gary was preceded in death by his loving wife Barbara on August 30, 2013, and his parents Kenneth and Norma Jean. Gary has been cremated. A celebration of Gary and Barbara’s lives will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the VFW Hall in Lake Leelanau on M-204. In lieu of flowers or memorials, donations may be made to a gofundme account that has been set up to defray funeral/memorial expenses. Please visit: gofundme.com/gary-aschim-funeral-expenses. Please feel free to share your thoughts and memories with Gary’s family at www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com. Mark C.Grech - February 19th, 2022
I first met Gary in Miss Jack’s algebra class at Lowell junior high. We became close friends and were pretty much inseparable through college. After I moved to California in 1977 I would return to Michigan almost every year. There were many fishing trips and camping adventures for 40+ years after I left. I’ll always remember Gary as smart, witty and having a great sense of humor. I will always miss him dearly.

George Edward Farris
( January 29, 1953 - April 24, 2022 )

George Edward Farris

Age 69, of Northville, passed away on April 24, 2022, after fighting as hard as he could and never giving up. In October of 2020 George was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer and lost his battle after a year and a half. He was born January 29, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan; son of Robert and Ellen (nee Main) Farris. George was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Jill M. Foreman on July 27, 1974; they were lovingly devoted to one another for over 47 years.

He was the first graduating class from Livonia Churchill High School, class of 1971. After graduation he started a 30-year career at Ford Motor Sterling Axle plant as a Job Setter and retired in 2002. On the day he retired his first grandchild was born which then started his second career as Papa. Always loyal to Ford, he never purchased any other make of car and was especially proud of his Ford Mustangs. George passed his passion for cars on to his grandsons.

George was an avid reader whose favorite author was Stephen King. He enjoyed travelling; his choice cities to travel to in Europe were Paris and Florence. Back home he treasured the time he spent with his family at the cottage on Sage Lake. George was a die-hard Detroit Lions fan and a season ticket holder since 1988.

He had the gift of gab and was a creative storyteller; his grandchildren always enjoyed his mysterious and fun stories. George was stylish and was a well-dressed man. He even matched his socks to the shirt he was wearing. George was a good friend and neighbor who liked to be the life of the party; his dancing skills were well known. He taught both his daughters and granddaughters how to dance. George was a loving, fun, and adventurous husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. To know George is to love George.

Katharine Hahn

Birth Date: 1954-08-18
Deceased Date: 2013-12-19
Obituary:
Katharine Hahn was born on August 18, 1954 in Livonia, Michigan to William and Elvira Hahn. She grew up with one sister and four brothers. Kath passed away peacefully at Arbor Hospice on December 19, 2013. Katharine attended Livonia public schools. After graduating from Winston Churchill High School in 1972, she earned a BA and BFA in Art History and Art Design from The University of Michigan in 1976 and 1978 respectively. Having traveled throughout the country to national parks by car with her parents and siblings at an early age, she developed a sense of adventure and loved to travel. She later traveled to Hawaii, Colorado, Vancouver and Victoria on Vancouver Island in British Columbia as well as various cultural centers closer to home in Illinois, Ohio, and Ontario. Passionate and creative, Kath, as she preferred to be called, devoted most of her life to art, volunteer work and her family. By incorporating painting, drawing, sewing, photography along with various objects and materials, Kath created original multi-media artwork. She created an original doll that was hand crafted from vintage and new materials. Each doll was a one of a kind design constructed from unique combinations of fabrics, trim beading, embroidery and hand painting. In addition to art, Kath was an accomplished ice skater and avid cyclist. She enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting and gardening. No stranger to power tools, she was a do-it-yourself kind of gal. If she couldn't do it herself, she could depend on family to help her get it done. She embraced all forms of creative expression from Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soliel to Shakespeare and musical theatre. She had an eclectic taste in music ranging from folk to jazz to classical and opera. However, she loved the Beatles. She deeply loved her children as well as her nieces and nephews. She was always willing to offer help and advice and delighted in their successes. Kath had many friends from the Unitarian Church, the University of Michigan, the art community and the Ann Arbor and Saline neighborhoods where she lived. She leaves to cherish fond memories her parents, William and Elvira Hahn; her husband, Louis Bantom; her son Brian Kuzma (Sarah), her daughter, Laura Kuzma, her sister, Mary Bice (Marshall), her brothers, Tom Hahn (Sandy), Paul Hahn (Jennie) and John Hahn (Rain); many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 2pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4001 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.
