After graduating high school, I attended WSU and earned a degree in Environmental Science. My career began at Washington Water Power (now Avista). In 1987, I moved from Spokane to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I married Pat McGrath, and we raised our daughter and son. Over the years, I've enjoyed diverse roles in sales and management across various businesses. A significant milestone was co-founding Baratza in 1999 with a friend from WSU. Baratza specializes in designing, manufacturing, and distributing precision coffee grinders for the home, allowing me the fun and challenges of collaborating with specialty coffee roasters, cafes, and coffee enthusiasts to improve their brewing experiences. I've been fortunate to balance my career with loads of family time. Our daughter lives in Washington, and our son in Colorado. Together, we enjoy cooking, outdoor sports, and traveling. Pat and I retired in 2022, cherishing the freedom to explore new adventures together. Thanks to everyone involved in organizing our reunion. I look forward to seeing you all. |

Hi, Greetings from Norway to all of Class -74. The school year 1973-1974 was a very special year for me. I had been lucky enough receive a scholarship as exchange student and to go to Spokane and to be a part of the Class of 74 at Joel E. Ferris. So many memories come up. Spokane was a wonderful city, my host family took me out for swimming and water skiing and fishing in the summertime and downhill skiing in winter. Coming from a small school in a small city, It was overwhelming going to a school with so many students, but I was met with so much friendliness and good people. Joel E. Ferris offered so many classes and opportunities, it was hard to choose. I remember enjoying US History with Mr Kingsland, I also had Spanish classes and electronics, choir with Mr Shepherd, and especially being part in the musical Oliver. I was not used to having choir and sports as part of school and trying to play football must have been one the hardest things I have tried - never having seen it before, and I think our coach must have struggled a bit with me. I even had a go at track, where the coach had the sense to put me on the B-team. It is now 50 years since graduation, but I still have my letterman jacket, the football my host father gave me and the yearbook with pictures and greetings from so many of you. Thank you so much for this wonderful year that has meant so much to me. I don't play football anymore, but I have been in choirs, I still do running half-marathon, enjoy fishing and outdoors activities like skiing, hiking and sea-kayaking, and the Spanish I learned has been very helpful traveling to Spanish speaking countries. I am sorry that I could not come to meet up with you to celebrate and share memories. I wish you all a very happy gathering and good times together. 50 years is a long time, and we are that much older now, and hopefully wiser. We did not know what life would bring us back then, and it was hard to imagine ourselves as old. We looked forward then, closing on 70 I still do, but I find myself often looking more backwards than forwards. After graduation I had to say goodbye to all of you and to my host family, the Kindsvogels who had been so kind and patient and kept up with me for a year, not knowing if I would see any of you again. Returning to Norway I had to do another year of Norwegian high school and after that I moved from my hometown of Kristiansand to Bergen to study medicine at the University of Bergen. I really liked the city of Bergen and my studies and enjoyed my years there. At the end of the studies I finally met the girl, Synnøve, who was to become my wife. We married and had our first child in 1981. We had to move several times the following years for my internship and military service and jobs, but in 1985 we ended up in the small village of Valen, in the municipality of Kvinnherad on the west coast of Norway just south of Bergen. We ended up with four children, the youngest born in 1988. I have been working as a doctor, in different jobs but most of the years as a GP My wife has also worked in health care for elderly, psychiatry and others with special needs. We are both retired now as of last year. Our four children all live in Bergen now, it is only a 3 hour drive away and we have a flat there, so we get to see them and our 6 grandchildren quite often. 50 years and so many days and hours summed up in a few lines. A life becomes a story looking back, and you can put all of the pieces of your life together like a puzzle to become a comprehensible picture. Many things don’t necessarily fit into the picture you want to present, so many things have happened, so many deeds have been done, so many choices taken, so many people we have met, so many things we did not do, so many chances taken and so many chances missed. Some of the things that I have done, highlights of my life, are getting married and having children. I have a wonderful wife and we have managed to stay together and keep the relationship between us growing event through some tough times. I have had a good job and challenging and varied jobs. Mostly working as a Family Doctor, I have also had other jobs. I have worked in post war Yugoslavia in project rebuilding Primary Health Care in Bosnia and Kosovo. Seeing the consequences of hate policies and war was an eye-opener. I have also spent half a year in Afghanistan as a doctor for Norwegian ISAF forces after 9-11. One of our best years was when I in 2009-10 worked as a Family Doctor in New Zealand. We really had a wonderful year, in a wonderful country. Our children, who had all left the home at that time, came down to spend time with us, and my wife and I had a wonderful time sightseeing, traveling, hiking the mountains and kayaking the seas of New Zealand. Like Spokane and Washington State, Norway also has plenty of nature with opportunities for mountain hiking and sea-kayaking. Where we live we have the sea right in front of us and hills and high mountains behind us with the Folgefonna glacier. Greetings and my best wishes for all of us. Stories of our lives are told looking back, and it would be wonderful to meet up with you and share with you. Looking back I feel that I have been lucky to have had a good life. Life has to be lived forward, not knowing what is coming, but I hope that there are good things still in store for us, and that we have gained the strength and wisdom to cope with the hard and difficult things that we might meet.
