According to available records, the McClary family had its origin in the farming community of Cedar Swamp, located in Williamsburg County near Kingstree, South Carolina. We believe Charles McClary, was born a slave between 1855 and 1860. He and his brother likely lived on and cared for horses on the Lockwood McClary plantation of the Cedar Swamp area around 1862-1864. At this time, we do not know any further history of Charles McClary's brother.
