On June 13, 2016, we were told over the phone Michel's bloodwork showed blood cancer. They directed us to pack a bag immediately and report to the pediatric oncology group in Boise, ID. Michael received a diagnosis of a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. The news of kidney failure, the need for 24-hour dialysis, spinal injections, pediatric ICU, surgery for a Hickman special double port, and the devastating discussion of the brutal and aggressive chemo regimen that they would undergo over six months while in-patient accompanied the diagnosis.

John, deployed, arrived within 72 hours of the diagnosis to a scared, confused, sick Michael, who had just begun his fight against cancer. However, he also came home to a fantastic oncology and hospital staff, friends who were carrying some of the burden along with us, prayers being lifted across the country, and supportive families going through the same nightmare.

Although we didn't realize it at the time of diagnosis and treatment, our lives would change for the better. We learned many valuable lessons from Michael's fight and win over cancer. Here are just a few: community is critical, and we need others to get through tough times and celebrate the wins; things work better when we give God control; showing gratitude in the worst of times is essential to survive the dark days and remind us of the good, prayer works and Michael is the true definition of a warrior!

In recognition of his fight and as our way of showing our gratitude for him being in remission, our family started a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to help financially support families with children going through complicated medical procedures and treatments, especially those with special needs, as we understand the added challenges. Michael's Warriors is always accepting applications and direct referrals. We have had the honor of helping and meeting many families since starting the organization.
