Gordon E. Abbott, 52, better known as 'Butch,' passed away unexpectedly at his home on April 28, 2008, due to heart failure. Graduating from Menchville High School, he spent much of his life on the Peninsula before relocating to the Fredericksburg area. He was proficient in many fields, specializing as a master carpenter. He was an avid Redskins and NASCAR fan and enjoyed golf, hunting and various outdoor activities. He is survived by his loving parents, Gordon and Barbara Abbott of Norge, and his two children, Lindsay Brooke of Richmond and Phillip Duane of Spotsylvania.

SURRY - Beree Allen, 54, died at Sentara Hampton Careplex, on Dec. 1, 2009 after a courageous fight with cancer. She was born July 13, 1955, in Newport News, Va., to the late Robert and Maggie Allen. She worked as a healthcare provider. Beree is survived by three brothers and five sisters, Robert Allen, Jr (Sharond), Anthony Allen, Monte Allen(Sasha), Barbara Allen, Peggie Vaughan, Janice Mason (Ronald), Alice Allen and Diane Dekoladenu (William); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was employed by the Daily Press in the housekeeping department and at Christopher Newport University in the housekeeping department. She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Christopher J. Margaret Artis Jackson died on Friday, Aug. 13, 1999. She was born Oct. 1, 1954, in Suffolk, and she and her family moved to Newport News in 1956. Margaret was educated in the Newport News school system, graduating from Warwick High School in 1973. She received two certificates in early childhood education from Thomas Nelson Community College in May 1999. She was a sales associate in the hardware department at Sears, Roebuck and Co. and a substitute teacher for Newport News Public Schools. She was a member of the Solid Rock Church in the city of Newport News, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, praise worship leader, president of the usher board and treasurer of the usher fund and choir fund. Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Leon Jackson; daughters, LaTasha Artis, Essence Jackson and Kelanda Jackson, all of Newport News, and Shawana Hawkins of Hampton; father, James M. Artis of Hampton; mother, Audrey M. Artis of Newport News; sisters, Grate D. Artis of Newport News, Valerie D. Woodard and Sheila R. Hall of Hampton; brothers, James M. William "Bro" Augburn Jr., 67, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Riverside Hospital. He was born in Halifax County, N.C. and moved to Virginia shortly thereafter. He was a graduate of Warwick High School Class of 1973, an Army veteran and proud soldier.
He was preceded in death by parents, Hazel and William (Ghost) Augburn, Sr. and three brothers, Lee A. Clark, Hilary L. Dickens and Dwayne M. Augburn.
He is survived by his mother, Lillie D. Augburn; four sisters, Patricia A. Augburn, Wanda E. Rogers (Keith), Valerie A. Walker and Pamela Jones; one brother, Gregory D. Augburn (Sheila); two sisters-in-law, Carolyn S. Dickens and Catherlena D. Clark; nine nieces, six nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park with rites by Bethel No. 31; Jobs Daughters. The body will be placed in the church at noon Tuesday. The family will receive friends at Peninsula Funeral Home from 7 to 9 tonight. Pallbearers will be Steve Oser, Bob Whitehead, George Cook, Al Witt, Don Thompson, Keith Deskins, Greg Johnson and Chuck Topping. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Menchville High School senior class, the Menchville Keyettes,. Survivors include her husband, Clarence Wilson; a daughter, Brenda Wilson of Newport News; a son, Robert Eugene Washington of Newport News; her father, Samuel Baines of Apex, NC; her mother, Lillian D. Baines of Newport News; three sisters, Hermene Jones of Silver Springs, MD, Brenda Baines of Hampton, and Sharon Baines of Newport New; four brothers, John Baines of Springfield, Lionel Baines of Andrews Air Force Base, MD, Kenneth Baines and Donald Baines, both of Newport News.

Jacqueline Minson Ball, 49, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on March 6, 2005. Jackie, as she was lovingly known to her family and friends, was predeceased by parents, Jack and Betty Ball. Survivors include her sister, Linda B. Aiello, brother-in-law, Lou Aiello, niece, Christine and her husband, Ryan Craig, and great-nephew Jackson Craig. She is also survived by her step-mother, Barbara Ball, as well as Craig, Mark, Kathy and Ronin Robinson. She leaves behind her beloved cat, Sunny. Jackie graduated from Menchville High School and Meredith College, and received an MSW from Norfolk State University. Jackie worked for the Newport News Court Service Unit and later for the Institute for Family Centered Services. Jackie was an avid runner who ran the New York Marathon; she also enjoyed kayaking and other outdoor activities. In addition, Jackie was a keen reader, a lover of classical music and the arts. She was a gifted photographer and artist. Her legacy will be one of dignity, kindness and love as evidenced by the many friends whose lives she touched in her short lifetime. The family and "Friends of Jackie Ball" would like to especially thank the nursing staff at Sentara Nursing Home in Chesapeake, as well as the Hospice Staff, for their compassionate care.

George Edward Barrow IV, 49, of Arlington, Va., died Nov. 5, 2004. He was born and grew up in Newport News, Va. He graduated with honors from Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Va. Mr. Barrow began a career in banking at First Virginia Bank. He also worked for American Security Bank and Bank of America in Washington D.C. Most recently, he was a private mortgage banker with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in McLean, Va. Mr. Barrow was a generous and active supporter of the arts. His work helped to strengthen programs at The Ford's Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre, The Studio Theatre, Signature Theatre, Kennedy Center and Helen Hayes Awards. He is survived by his two sisters, Mary Anne Dellinger and husband, Gerald, and Patricia VonOhlen and husband, William; nephews, Mark Dellinger, Will VonOhlen, Ben VonOhlen, and niece, Nancy Dellinger; as well as many friends and best friend, Helen Pate. Mr. Barrow was preceded in death by his parents, George E. Barrow III and Nancy Kelly Barrow of Newport News.

HAMPTON - Judy Lawrence Robinson, 62 passed away on November 2, 2017. She was born in Suffolk, Virginia to the late Bernice Batten and Julia Jones. She graduated from Warwick High School in 1973 and would later attend and graduated from Old Dominion University and William & Mary. She was an educator for over 30 years, serving at Newport News Public Schools and Hampton Public Schools. Judy was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Hampton and Delta Sigma Theta. HAMPTON - Judy Lawrence Robinson, 62 passed away on November 2, 2017. She was born in Suffolk, Virginia to the late Bernice Batten and Julia Jones. She graduated from Warwick High School in 1973 and would later attend and graduated from Old Dominion University and William & Mary. She was an educator for over 30 years, serving at Newport News Public Schools and Hampton Public Schools. Judy was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Hampton and Delta Sigma Theta. Rodney Wayne Batts, known as “Ronnie” was born on January 3, 1955, and unexpectedly passed away in his home on February 19, 2024.
He leaves behind a legacy of excellence as a reputable transmission builder and business owner, specializing in automatic and manual transmissions, for almost five decades.
Ronnie’s passion for craftsmanship extended beyond his profession; he found joy in restoring classic cars and trucks and tending to his beloved York County home. His spirit was as vibrant as his storytelling, leaving lasting impressions on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Ronnie had a passion for the Tidewater area and the Chesapeake Bay, finding comfort and joy in its natural beauty.
He attended Newport News High School and graduated from Warwick High School. Ronnie’s time in the Newport News high school band sparked his lifelong love for music and camaraderie.
Ronnie will be dearly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his former wife Sandy; son RJ Batts and fiancé Hannah; daughter Kara Turk; daughter Amber Hardesty and husband Sean; and grandchildren Mariah, Jenna, Ivy, Casey, Emma, Haley, and Sadie, all of Yorktown, VA. He is also survived by his sister Vicki Bukovitz and husband Jim; nephew Brian Bukovitz; niece Laura Paschall and husband David, and their children, all of Chattanooga Tennessee.

George was born July 20, 1955, in Newport News, Va., to George II and Janie Baughans George Baughans attended school in Newport News and graduated from Menchville High School in 1973. He worked at Newport News Shipbuilding until his illness. He also worked at Norshipco and Smithfield Packing Company during his early years. George, known as 'Manne' to so many, was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Nancy Holloman Mason Baughans; seven children, Ta-Tanisha Rodriguez (Dice) of Newport News, Timika Young of Richmond, George S. Patricia 'Tricia' Pittard, 53, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 14, 2007, after a courageous 15 year battle with cancer. She died in her home surrounded by her family. She had devoted her life to serving God and others, especially her family. She was known for her grace and hospitality, and her home was a haven for many in need. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mabel Bentley. Waiting to join her in heaven are her husband of 30 years, Bruce Pittard; her daughters, Erin and Joanna Pittard; her father and step-mother, Mac and Joyce Bentley; her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Vicki Bentley and her sister, Pam Bickett.
