Eric Coble
1945-06-20 2025-03-17Eric Clayton Coble passed away March 17, 2025, at the Denver Hospice at Lowry. He was born June 20, 1945, in Denver, CO to Eugene + Helen Coble. He attended Merrill Jr. High, and Thomas Jefferson H.S, where he was senior class president and an all-city football player, graduating in 1963. He attended Yale University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1967. After university, he joined the Navy and served in Vietnam as a Lieutenant JG and courier for sensitive information between 1968 and 1971. He utilized the G.I. bill to pursue graduate studies in Sweden. He returned to Colorado in 1974 and received his teaching certificate at Denver University (DU). Through great dedication, he became a well-regarded world history, geography, international politics, and economics teacher in the Cherry Creek School District for many years. He wore khaki pants, a white button-down shirt, a tie, and Doc Marten shoes to the classroom every day.
A year after meeting through mutual friends, Eric married Carolyn Mae Peterson in 1976 at the Evans Memorial Chapel at DU. They spent many occasions with Carolyn’s sister Geneva, her late husband, Ross, friend Anne McLendon, and other teaching friends. Eric and Carolyn’s son, Jonathan Coble, was born in 1983. Eric was a steadfast attendee of Jonathan’s sporting events and academic functions. And on each Friday for many years, Eric and family would trek out to dinner somewhere along the front range.
Eric is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his son, Jonathan along with wife, Iris, and granddaughter Zinnia. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Geneva Corace, his brother + sister-in-law Jerry + Claudia Peterson and his nephew Ryan Peterson + family.
Eric was a scholar, book + film devotee, coffee drinker, dog-lover, and passionate educator.
