1990 was the birth of the World Wide Web! Smoking was banned on all cross-country flights and bars in the United States. Nelson Mandela was finally released from prison. The Hubble Telescope was launched aboard Space Shuttle Discovery. Microsoft launched Windows 3. Jim Henson passed away at the age of 53 from toxic shock syndrome. Ryan White died of AIDS at the age of 18. The World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of diseases. The Berlin Wall came down. President George H. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act, signed to protect disabled Americans from discrimination. The San Francisco 49ers won Super Bowl XXIV. Seinfeld first appeared on TV. "Driving Miss Daisy" won 4 Oscar’s at the Academy Awards, including best picture. The sketch comedy television series "In Living Color" debuted on April 15, 1990. The first McDonald’s opened in Moscow, Russia. Eggs were 98 cents a dozen. Coca-Cola cost $1.99 for an eight-pack. Potatoes were 89 cents for a five pound bag.
1991
1991 was the beginning of the Gulf War with Operation Desert Storm. Dr. Seuss passed away. Johnny Carson retired from The Tonight Show, and Magic Johnson retired from the LA Lakers. The World Wide Web was launched to the public and Microsoft.com went online. Nintendo released its 16 Bit Console, The Super Nintendo on September 9th. Nirvana released Nevermind two weeks later on September 24th. Dollar Tree was founded. Whitney Huston sang the Star Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XXV. The Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup Championship. MC Hammer started a fashion trend: Hammer Pants! Beauty and the Beast was released in theaters. Terminator 2 was released in theaters, giving us the eternal phrase, "Hasta la Vista, Baby." Marky Mark rocked the radio with "Good Vibrations." Anthony Hopkins scared us in Silence of the Lambs. A gallon of milk cost $2.80. A pound of bacon cost $1.95. This cost of a U.S. Postage Stamp increased from 25 cents to 29 cents. National minimum wage increased from $3.80 to $4.25 per hour.
1992
1992 marked the 500th anniversary of the Christopher Columbus voyage to the Americas. Bill Clinton was elected President. Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer went to prison. Four LA police officers were indicted for the Rodney King beating. The Mall of America opened in Bloomington, Minnesota. PepsiCo began to test market Crystal Pepsi, and the bread machine made its way into American kitchens. 60 minutes was the most popular TV show. Aladdin was the most popular film. NHL went on strike for the first time in their 75-year history; the strike lasted ten days. Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced that they were separating after 11 years of marriage. The largest McDonald’s opened in Beijing, China. Gas cost $1.13 per gallon. Eggs were 93 cents a dozen. A five pound bag of potatoes cost $1.69. The average price of a CD was $11.99.
1993
1993 was the year of Doc Martins, Air Jordans and Converse. The World Trade Center bombing occurred on February 26th, killing six people. Rudy Giuliani became the first Republican mayor of New York City in 20 years. Sleepless in Seattle was released in theaters. The first Beanie Babies hit the market. Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. An ex executive order was issued requiring the United States Air Force to allow women to fly planes. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was sworn in as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Michael Jordan walked away from the game. River Phoenix died. The Jurassic Park franchise began. TV's Food Network made its debut. A 30-second Super Bowl ad was $850,000. The median household income was $31,241. The average price of a new home was $147,700. A pint of blueberries cost 99 cents. A two liter bottle of Coca-cola cost 99 cents.
1994
1994 was when the Netscape browser was launched, and computer "cookies" first appeared. Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by Tonya Harding at the Winter Olympics. Steven Spielberg finally won his first two Oscars for Schindler's List. Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was found dead on April 5th. Nelson Mandela was the first democratically elected president of South Africa, ending apartheid for good. Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were murdered on June 12th and OJ Simpson was arrested after a high speed chase. The Lion King was released in theaters. Jeff Bazos founded Amazon. The World Series was cancelled for the first time in 90 years. Friends made its television debut on NBC. The first ever online purchase was Pizza Hut Pizza. Sony invented the 32 bit PlayStation Console. "I Saw the Sign" by Ace of Base was the #1 song. The George Foreman Grill was released. Hershey's debuted the cookies and cream candy bar. Forrest Gump was the most popular film. The world population was 5,564,000,000. A loaf of white bread cost $1.99 and one pound of ground meat cost $1.39.
1995
1995 was when DVD's and Java computer language were invented. President Clinton lifted the 23-year oil ban on Alaskan exports. New York became the 38th state to allow the death penalty. Galileo became the first spacecraft to orbit Jupiter. Windows released Windows 95. Bill Gates was named The Richest Man in the World by Forbes magazine. The FDA approved the first chicken pox vaccine. The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame opened in Cleveland, Ohio. Playboy magazine became legal again after a 34 year ban. Michael Jordan "un-retired." OJ was acquitted. Coolio's Gansta's Paradise topped the charts. Brad Pitt was named People Magazine’s Sexist Man Alive. Toy Story was the most popular film. The average rent was $550 per month. A Hershey's chocolate bar was 50 cents. An ounce of gold was $387. A McDonald's hamburger was 85 cents.
1996
1996 is when the internet gained popularity, dial-up was common and websites were basic. Hotmail came online. By January, there were only 100,000 websites on the internet. Bill Clinton won re-election. The Hubble Space Telescope revealed images of Pluto’s surface for the first time. Nintendo released the Nintendo 64. Dolly, the cloned sheep was born. The toll free area code 888 went into service. The Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl and the New York Yankees won the World Series. Redesigned $100 bills went into circulation. Hard liquor ads were banned on television and radio. Independence Day was the top film. Braveheart won an Oscar for best picture. The Spice Girls dominated the radio. Blue M&M's beat the competition to be the new color. Everyone was dancing the Macarena. A gallon of gas averaged $1.22. Minimum wage was $4.75 per hour. Postage stamps raised to 32 cents. A six pack of Coca-cola cans was 99 cents. Bacon was $1.24 per pound.
1997
1997 gave us Buffy the Vampire Slayer but took away the Notorious B.I.G., Gianni Versace and Princess Diana. Elton John re-made “Candle in the Wind” as a tribute to Princess Diana. Ireland granted its first legalized divorce. Tyra Bank became the first African American model. Ellen DeGeneres came out as a lesbian to Time Magazine. Google.com was registered as a domain name. New York Times' published their first color photographs. The United States Treasury introduced the redesigned $50 bill to deter counterfeits. The Simpsons became the longest running prime-time animated series. Woolworths closed it stores after more than 100 years in business. Teletubbies made their debut. Mr. Rogers received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Titanic was the most popular film. The median household income was $37,000. A new home cost $176,000. A gallon of gas averaged $1.22. Milk was $1.90 per gallon.
1998
1998 was when Yahoo! was launched on the internet and blogs appeared for the first time. Google's first "Google Doodle" appeared on their webpage. Microsoft released Windows 98. Paula Jones accused President Bill Clinton of sexual harassment. President Clinton also denied having "sexual relations" with Monica Lewinsky. Terry Nicholas was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing. Ford Motor Company bought Volvo for $6.45 billion. Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 on his 20th attempt. Disney's Animal Kingdom opened to the public for the first time and Mulan was released. The FDA approved Viagra for erectile dysfunction. Sex and the City premiered and Seinfeld aired its last episode. Titanic won an Oscar for Best Picture. The Broadway musical Grease closed after 1,503 performances. The Denver Broncos were the Super Bowl XXXII champs, the New York Yankees won the World Series and the Detroit Red Wings clinched the Stanley Cup. Minimum wage was $5.15. The average price of a new car was $17,200. A Whirlpool washing machine cost $249. A dozen eggs were 88 cents.
1999
1999 brought us the Y2K scare, but also the euro currency and Sponge Bob Square Pants. Microsoft released Windows 98 Second Edition. The first Space Shuttle docked at the International Space Station. The Liberty Bell 7 space capsule was raised from the ocean floor. Tiger Woods won his first PGA Championship. Wayne Gretzky was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Albert Einstein was named "Person of the Century" by Time Magazine. Britney Spears and Eminem released their breakout albums. PayPal was the most widely used online payment platform. The words "bing, blogger, blogosphere, clickbait, e-reader, texting, and vape" all appeared in print for the first time. Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace was the most popular film and Who Want to be a Millionaire was the most popular TV show. Law and Order Special Victims Unit premiered on NBC. The Denver Broncos were the Super Bowl winners. The average ticket price for a Denver Broncos game was $49. A one-day adult ticket to Disneyland was $41. The price of basic cable was $31.22 per month. Walmart stock was $69.12 a share. The Crayola 24 pack of crayons was $1.79.
