Comment: After graduating from St. Joe's, I went to Notre Dame in Indiana, then headed to New York where I worked in the magazine development divisions at Hearst Corp. and Bauer Publishing, plus I launched new TV series for Viacom, etc. Then I decided to become the world's first and only expert on Hollywood showbiz awards like Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, etc. I wrote books on them all for Variety and Penguin Books -- and suddenly I was everywhere on TV, including costarring with Joan and Melissa Rivers for 12 years on those original red-carpet Pre-Shows on E! In year 2000, I launched a website, GoldDerby.com, inviting Experts from Variety, IMDb, TV Guide, USA Today, NPR and other top media to make award predictions with me as we compete against thousands of regular award fans for best accuracy scores. GoldDerby.com became such a huge hit within the Hollywood industry that I licensed it for 6 years to the L.A. Times, then I reclaimed the full site and sold 75% of it in 2015 to Penske Media Corp., which publishes Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, etc., and now is the world's largest publisher of entertainment media. I retain 25% ownership of GD and was asked to stay on as the company's president and editor-in-chief. For the past 30 years I've lived at 3 difference homes at the same time: New York (where I own a co-op apt with magnificent views), Beverly Hills (where I rent a spacious, elegant apt perfect for the many parties I throw), and the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania where I own a snug, comfy cabin on a lake. Since I'm permitted to work from home, I spend my time hopping between those 3 cozy places while letting PMC pay for my frequent travel. I plan to retire in 2026 when I reach age 70. Ultimately, I've managed to live America's classic Internet Dream -- I created a new successful business, sold it to Hollywood's #1 entertainment publisher and was asked to stay on for another 10 years. As soon as I retire, I plan to shut down my California apt. and race up to my remote, lovely cabin in the Poconos and then commute back and forth to my NY apt (located right behind Lincoln Center) whenever I feel like it. Wow, what a miraculous life I've lived, and I can thank good ole St. Joe's for playing a starring role in shaping my constantly curious mind and for my ferocious spirit just before I struck out into a harsh world, determined to conquer the entertainment industry.
