John Paul Sukys, 55, passed away July 10, 2010, at his residence on Johns Island. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 31, 1955, he was one of five children of Julius and Matilda Sukys. John was preceded in death by his mother and is survived by his father; three brothers, Daniel, David and Mike; and one sister, Annie.

In celebration, John's friends will gather on Wednesday, July 21, from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, at Saint Pascal Baylon Church in Highland Heights, Ohio. In 1978, John received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Economics from the University of Cincinnati. John was commissioned as an officer in the Navy and subsequently entered the Coast Guard. After his discharge, he served as a civilian Financial Program Analyst for the Coast Guard; he was honored with the Commander's Award for outstanding achievement in 2003. John was a founding member of the Department of Homeland Security, and received outstanding service recognition from the US Department of Commerce. In 2004, he began his career with the Department of National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

John was an avid sailor and golfer who will be sadly missed at the "Muni" and throughout the Charleston golf community. A man who displayed both integrity and humility, John will be remembered for his generosity, gentle spirit and kindness to people and animals alike. John loved a good laugh, and was known for his contagious humor. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
