JOSEPH Radican, 72, died May 31 at the Hospice of the Western Reserve from complications of melanoma.
Joseph Aloysius Radican was the first lay principal of St. Joseph High School, back when it was the biggest boys’ Catholic school in Ohio. He also led Lake Catholic High School and was named regional principal of the year by the National Catholic Education Association.
"His voice was very deep and commanding," said St. Joseph alumnus Tim Robertson, Jr., who studied history with Radican. "He was a very articulate man who knew his history."
Radican was raised in Cleveland and spent his final decades in Euclid. He studied at St. Joseph for a year, then graduated from Borromeo Seminary and John Carroll University, earning a master’s degree in history
He became a lieutenant in the Army and saw action in the Dominican Republic uprising of 1965.
Back at St. Joseph, he taught history and government and coached speech and debate for six years. In 1971, a committee of parents, students and faculty chose the 32-year-old as principal of the Marianist school.
In 1976, Radican took over Lake Catholic. He later returned to what became Villa Angela-St. Joseph as a teacher and speech and debate coach. He retired in 2007 and was inducted into the school’s hall of fame.
Radican was vice president and parliamentarian of the Cleveland High School and Academy Lay Teachers Association. He liked to read history, travel abroad, cruise Lake Erie on a friend’s boat and play golf in Florida.
