The John Carroll University community, especially the men's basketball program, is mourning the loss of legendary coach Bob Straub, who died on July 15 at the age of 82 in Oklahoma.
Straub, who had battled diabetes for the better part of the past two decades, had moved from his longtime home in Ohio to be closer to his daughters.
A 1959 graduate of John Carroll with a degree in social science, Straub (wearing #34 in the photo below) played varsity basketball for the Blue Streaks from 1955-1958, helping John Carroll capture a Presidents' Athletic Conference championship his senior year. Following graduation, he would earn his Master's degree in Education from Eastern Kentucky University.
His coaching career spanned 40 years, beginning with a 31-year stint at St. Joseph (now Villa Angela-St. Joseph) High School on the east side of Cleveland. During that span of time, Straub would hold at various junctures the titles of head varsity, head junior varsity and freshman boys basketball coach. He led St. Joseph a Class AAA state runner-up performance in 1979.
When Mike Moran landed the job as head men's basketball coach at John Carroll, Straub was his first hire as assistant coach.
"I don't think we have enough time to talk about everything he has meant to me and everything he has done for me," Moran said in an article that appeared in the Lake County Nerws Herald. "Athletically, personally, family-wise — every category there — he has been involved with. He was a permanent fixture in the Moran household, that's for sure.
"The term 'lifelong friend' would sum it up best. I'm sure a lot of people would say that about him."
Straub officially served for nine years as the assistant coach for both men's basketball and men's soccer at John Carroll. During his tenure in University Heights, Straub was part of eight Ohio Athletic Conference titles (five men's soccer, three men's basketball) and four NCAA appearances (all with men's basketball). Although health issues forced his retirement at the end of the 1999-2000 academic year, Straub was still a fixture with the JCU men's basketball program until he moved away last year.
Moran indicated that plans are underway for a memorial service in the Cleveland area in the coming weeks.

Of course we all held the coaches at St Joe's in high esteem. I was not on the varsity basketball team. Or football. Or wrestling track cross country tennis golf hockey bowling riflery. Intramurals. I played paper triangle football in the cafeteria, I was pretty good. I did have Mr Straub for health in freshman year. That included sex education. I remember that he lectured about stimulus and friction of the MRO and the FRO. I can't remember what happens if you stimulate the MRO or the FRO. If you do remember, try to see me at the reunion and clue me in.
