I did not have Mr Howard as a teacher but I was on the staff of the Knorr while Mr Howard was moderator. In 1969-70, Mr Howard was the only African-American in the faculty, out of about 85 (2 if you include Mr Appleton). He left St Joe's after our junior year. I remember Mr Howard for 2 things - - the cigar, and his style. He was a cool guy, and it was evident that he was a person with some depth and character. I did not know about his experience teaching in Baghdad, or that he had his master's in philosophy. When I knew him I was a dumb shit 15 year old. I think I would have appreciated him more as a dumb shit 68 year old.
