So many memories of a great mentor to all of us. I recall a speech I gave to the entire band when I was running for band President and at that time everyone wore their hair long except if you were in the band! I honestly thought Me Novak had exited the room as I said we will get our parents to write a letter demanding we be allowed to grow our hair long! Everyone clapped! And then as I ended my speech ending with “and I don’t care what Novak says “ I found myself staring at Mr Novak who apparently returned. His stern and kind of red unhappy facial expression made me realize that if I lose, I’m in big trouble! In retrospect we probably looked worse with our hair sticking out of our military caps! But my best memory is his introducing me to my best friend Ray Strimaitis and his sister and my wife of 45 years Diana. I never had the opportunity to thank him & I think about that often. RIP Mr. Novak. Among the many things you taught us, discipline and respect were on top of the list.
