MEIERDIRKS Bro. Joseph, S.M.Age 86 of Dayton, OH died March 3, 2007 at Mercy-Siena Woods. Born July 31, 1920 in Covington, KY, son of the late Joseph and Camille Meierdirks. He is survived by his sisters, Virginia Willett, Catherine Willett and Jean Nevitt. Served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the Pacific. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Oak Leaf Cluster, the Battle Honor, as well as a Purple Heart. In 1946 he graduated from Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, PA. With a degree in metallurgy. After graduation, he worked as an engineer for General Electric, Crucible Steel Co., the Cannon-Muskegon Corp. and Austenal Laboratories. He entered the Society of Mary and professed first vows August 22, 1961 in Marcy, NY and perpetual vows on August 13, 1967 at Mt. St. John. He obtained a Masters in Math Education in 1970 from the University of Maine in Orono, ME. Brother Joe taught at Purcell High School in Cincinnati, OH, Covington Catholic High School in Covington, KY, Moeller High School in Cincinnati and St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, OH. He also spent several years on the staff of the Research Institute at the University of Dayton. From 1984 to 1996 he served as a pastoral minister at St. Vincent Parish, St. Peter Parish and Holy Family Parish in the Cincinnati area as well as St. Bartholomew Parish in Miramar, FL. In 1996 he joined the Marianist retirement community at St. Leonard's in Dayton, OH and later moved to the Mercy-Siena retirement community. Visitation will take place at Queen of Apostles Chapel, Mount St. John, 4435 E. Patterson Road between 9:30 A.M. and 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 10, 2007. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Queen of Apostles Chapel at 10:30 A.M. Burial will take place immediately after Mass at Queen of Heaven Cemetery on the Mount St. John campus.
