Rob Balogh

Birth Date: 1956-05-10
Graduation year: 1974
Deceased Date: 2020-03-19
Obituary:
Robert Alan Balogh 63, of Aurora, CO, passed away on March 19, 2020. Rob was born on May 10, 1956 in Denver to Murray and Margaret (Haase) Balogh.
Rob was preceded in death by his parents, Murray and Margaret Balogh, son Jeff and uncles Donald Haase and Freeman Haase.

He is survived by his wife Karen Balogh, son David (Chris) Balogh of Centennial, stepson Tony (Lisa) Soper and their children Freya and Ansel of Aurora, sisters Rhonda (Bob) Lewis of Plano, Texas, Paula (Jared) Whittemore of Conifer, stepmother Lei Balogh of Arvada, sister-and brother-in-law Dee and Ray Carter of Aurora, aunt Evelyn Haase of Ashland, Nebraska and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues.

Rob graduated with honors in 1974 from Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver. In 1978 he graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in accounting and in the same year, earned his CPA certification. He went on to marry and had two sons, Jeff and David. An avid hiker and biker, Rob was involved in coaching his sons’ baseball, soccer and basketball teams and enjoyed attending high school games and state playoff games. His greatest joy was spending time with Jeff and David and their dogs Crystal and Columbine. One of his favorite activities with his boys was traveling around the state to show them the iconic sites.

A devoted Rockies fan, Rob was a season ticket holder from their inception in 1991 through 2017. He loved spending time with his sisters and their families. Any time his nieces and nephews were in town they would know that his trunk would be full of sporting equipment and games, including a water dish for the dogs, so he would be ready for any adventure or game they had in mind.

He married the love of his life Karen Balogh and together they continued his love for traveling and outdoor adventures. They spent many hours going to Air Force Academy and DU gymnastics meets to watch his nieces perform. Rob’s second great joy was spending time with granddaughter Freya and new grandson Ansel. He would carefully look for that special park where they could have the most fun.

In 1997 Rob opened his own accounting firm, Balogh and Tjornehoj, with partner Diana Tjornehoj, a practice that continued until his passing. His passion, honesty and integrity helped him retain many of his client relationships for 20+ years.

Patty McMullen Robinette - September 1st, 2024
Gary's dad and my dad worked together in the HVAC industry for many years. We became good friends at Hamilton and TJ. He was very kind, humble, and loyal. We lost touch after high school. We reconnected at an Orlando airport years later when our kids were very young. From that meeting, we supported one another in good times and tough times. I would often visit Gary at Bell Plumbing for many years and loved catching up. My heart broke when I heard that Gary had passed away... I will definitely miss seeing him at our reunion.

David Brashears

Birth Date: 1955-12-20
Graduation year: 1974
Deceased Date: 2024-03-14
Obituary:
David Breashears, a mountaineer turned documentary filmmaker, has died. He was 68.
Breashears died at his home on Thursday, March 14, according to a report from Outside magazine. His death was later confirmed by his business manager, Ellen Golbranson, and a statement from his family.

Throughout his lifetime, Breashears climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest five times, including with the IMAX camera in 1996. In 1983, Breashears transmitted the first live television images from the peak’s summit. Two years later, he repeated the trip and made history as the first American climber to visit the highest point on the planet for a second time.

A decade later, Breashears and his team were filming the Everest documentary when the May 10, 1996 blizzard struck the mountain and killed eight climbers. He and his team stopped filming to help the climbers–a story later told in his 2007 documentary, Remnants of Everest: The 1996 Tragedy.

Along with "Everest" (1998) and the many shorts he spun out about the summit, Breashears also worked on the documentary series Nova (1998) and a documentary on an expedition across Africa, Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa (2002), among others. He combined his passion for climbing and photography to become one of the world’s most admired adventure filmmakers.
The family's written statement continued, "What fulfilled him the most – where he’d want his legacy to lie – is his non-profit organization, GlacierWorks, which he founded in 2007 to highlight the Himalayan glaciers through art, science, and adventure. With GlacierWorks, he used his climbing and photography experience to create unique records revealing the dramatic effects of climate change on the historic mountain range."

Rick Rottman (TJ ‘73) - September 5th, 2024
I have fond memories of sitting with Leslie and her good friend Jackie Moore in the TJ cafeteria at lunch times during their Sophomore year. After over fifty years, the sorrow of losing Leslie so young seems so fresh, but the warm memories of her remain vivid and are cherished by me. Rick Rottman (TJ ‘73)

Leslie & I were good buddies in Jr. high and our first few years of high school. We planned to be nuns together later in life! We had a lot of laughs together - double dated our jr. year. I was devestated when she was killed in a car accident a few days before graduation - we had just made plans to get together and sign each other's year book........always think of her on her birthday - we would have been great "sisters!"
