Occupation (before retired): Semi Retired - Mental Health Educator
Highlights of the last 50 years.: The first 25 years of my life after graduating from Warren, went according to plan. After college, I married Ken, moved to Oceanside, and raised our two children.

In 2001, I started working at CSU San Marcos where I held various positions including Assistant to the Dean of Students, Resource Analyst for the Division of Student Affairs, and ultimately as the Executive Assistant to the President.

During my tenure at CSUSM – in 2008 – my life changed forever when my husband lost his battle with clinical depression and took his life. The years mired in his mental and emotional struggles and ultimate suicide forged a passion to bring awareness and understanding about these misunderstood topics- with a focus on educating the faith community.

My prayers were that God would open doors to share the hope and healing I experienced in the aftermath of our tragedy. I could never imagine the journey that would unfold as I retired from CSUSM in 2013 and walked into an unknown future.

One thing I learned is that God has a sense of humor. He took this shy introverted woman who hated writing and feared public speaking, and decided I should spend the majority of the next nine years writing and speaking publicly about mental health and suicide.

I authored three books – two under the pseudonym Joyce Turner – and one under my name based on a service learning project with UPENN.

I have spoken over 600 times – at conferences, on television and radio, to law enforcement, at universities, community groups, and more.

In 2013, a colleague and I pioneered the Grace Groups (faith-based mental health support groups) in San Diego County.

From 2015 to 2022, I served as the Director of Education and Executive Director for one of the premier survivors of suicide loss non-profits in America – SOSL San Diego.

In 2017, I was given an amazing opportunity to develop and teach the curriculum for a San Diego County program – The Faith Based Academy - designed to bridge the gap between faith communities and mental health professionals.

Today I am semi-retired – but continue to speak throughout southern California including at the Faith Based Academy.

What I want people to take away from my journey is that some of our lives and dreams have been shattered over these past fifty years. And we have a choice about how to move forward. When I gave God all the broken pieces, He led me on an unexpected journey and crafted a new life that is good, beautiful, and fulfilling. He can do that for anyone who is willing to trust Him.
