Dan Ashby Stringham

Birth Date: 1956-01-26
Graduation year: 1974
Deceased Date: 2006-05-31
Obituary:
From the contributor at Dan's Memorial Service:

I have a picture hanging in my office of the most important men in my life. It was taken on the day that Daralyn and I were married in 1982. Dan is one of those men. Dan was one of my best men in our wedding. I was honored to be one of his best men in his. He was one of my closest friends. I considered him a brother.

I first got to know Dan in junior high school. We hung out in the same circle of friends including Dave Alexander, Doug Marani and Brad Beckham to name a few. Our first year in high school we played football together. Dan played baseball. Our friendship grew with time.

After high school, Dan and David Ash moved down to San Diego to attend San Diego State and lived in Mission Beach. The next summer, I moved down there too to attend school and hang out with a couple of my best friends. Downey just wasn’t the same without those guys paling around.

Dan moved around more than anyone else I knew. He was the reason that I upgraded to more modern technology. My eraser wore a hole in my address book under Stringham. I bought an electronic organizer.

We water skied at Lake Almanor and Lake Havasu and snow skied together a lot over the years. We traveled down to Baja a few times to fish, skin dive and sail. Dan enjoyed fishing, skiing, surfing and sailing.

The past several summers we sailed to Catalina Island and we always had a great time together. Dan was fun to have onboard; plenty of wind. The sea did not always agree with Dan but he’d find his sea legs and usually he liked to take a good nap when we got to the island.

For the past thirty or so years, when Dan would call me, or I would call him,
I often said “Bean, how you doin’, Mr. Bean?”

Mr. Bean spoke often of his parents and I came to know how important they were in his life. He also loved his sister Darcy and his brother Del very much. He was so proud of all of them.

Dan spoke often of his friends. He liked to talk about them and even though I hadn’t spoken with many of them in years, Dan kept me up-to-date.

He was a real people person. He valued the relationships he had with his friends. There was a true genuineness that I admired about Dan.

Some of the friends Dan spoke about, often, were people who were never far from his thoughts. Friends like Alexander, Marani, Lindborg, David Ash; Jeff Rochenmacher and Jeff Tetreau. There were many others [including John Boydston].

Dan was indeed a rich man. I am not talking about money, although Dan always seemed to have plenty. He was rich with friends; the kind of friendships that money can’t buy.

Of course Dan was a lady’s man. He shared with me his affection for many of the girls he grew up with and stayed in touch with through the years. Many are here this morning.

Dan was not afraid to say what was on his mind. He had an honest approach when dealing with people. He was business minded and always had several projects going at one time.

Dan was always so industrious. He was talented and most people he worked for took a liking to him. I often referred work his way and the people he worked for often said what a character Dan is; usually with a smile.

There was no mistaking how much he loved his son, William. The past five years were the happiest I’d seen Dan. I am so glad he was able to be a good father to Will. Will was an answer to Dan’s prayers. Will fulfilled in Dan what nothing else could. I want to get to know Will and share with him my accounts of what his father was like when he was a young man.

Dan may not be with us physically anymore, but his spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of the people who knew and loved him.

Dan’s family and friends look forward to seeing you at the Madrid home following the services this afternoon as we celebrate Dan’s life. He would have wanted it this way.

May God bless the Stringham family and all who attended today.
