Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation):
I have been a professional clarinetist in the Madison area since the late 70’s. I received my Bachelor of Music from UW-Madison, my Master of Music from the University of Michigan and my Doctor of Musical Arts from UW-Madison. I became Principal Clarinet of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra in 1980. I am a founding member and clarinetist for the Oakwood Chamber Players, a chamber music group based at Oakwood Village since 1985. I have been the second clarinetist of the Madison Symphony since 1991. I recently retired from private clarinet teaching after 45 years. Being a musician allowed me to be a stay-at-home Mom during the day, but when my oldest daughter went to college, I embarked on a part-time career at the WI Dept of Transportation working in the DMV-Bureau of Field of Services. |
|
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived):
I have been married for 41 years to Mark, who I met in Ann Arbor. Of course we met in band. He followed me back to Madison since I had started my doctoral studies. In addition to being an ultimate harp mover, Mark is currently a purchasing agent for the Department of Transportation. We have been living in the same house on Regent Street since 1984. We are proud parents of 2 amazing daughters. Mary, is married and currently lives in Worcester, MA. She studied voice at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. She worked professionally in New York for 10 years and now performs mostly in the Boston area. Margaret, currently lives in New York City, and studied harp and art at UW-Madison, and harp at Manhattan School of Music. She currently works for the Insitutional Research Board in Cancer Research at Weill Cornell, and comes back to Madison occasionally to perform on harp with the Oakwood Chamber Players and Madison Symphony. |
|
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels):
I am still actively working as a clarinetist and at the DMV. After all the music groups took a hiatus for almost 2 years, we were back to performing our normal schedules in the 2021-22 season. WCO had it’s first Concerts on the Square (on the Square) in 2 years on June 29th. It was good to be back and see downtown Madison thriving. Most of our traveling has been to the east coast to see the girls and hear their performances. They both did grad school in NYC, so we had many trips there. With Mary in New England now, we have added some side trips to Maine and Vermont. I am also becoming more of a care giver for my parents who are still living in their house in Midvale Heights. |
|
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): I am hoping to slow down in the next few years, and do a little more traveling. |

Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation):
I was at Cherokee Junior High, then West High School for the 1969-1970 year. Like many, many others I left West High for Madison Community School (MCS) in the exodus that provided the impulse for MMSD to start Malcolm Shabbazz. Got a film degree from UW, worked at Merlyn's bar, took photos, made student films, and got serious about writing. Went to John Hopkins for a Master's from the Writing Seminars. Moved to LA and did video editing, daughter born there, and in 1990, returned with wife to Madison where we bought her childhood home and had another daughter. Drove cab for years. Got divorced, and Jan Sternbach and I reconnected. It's been about 12 years now. Kids are grown, and I'm enjoying them both returning to Madison in the past few years. Still go hear as much music as possible, still follow writing and politics, still enjoy hikes and biking, still keep up with many friends from over the years. |
