(1979), and PhD (1982), with a major in Speech-language Pathology/Special Education. The undergraduate degree took a bit longer than usual due to way too much fun but once I found a major, things sorted themselves out. I worked for a year in the public schools and then, post-Ph.D., I worked at universities in Wisconsin, Oregon, New Zealand and Tennessee. I retired in 2013 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and we moved from Tennessee to Paso Robles, California.
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): I was introduced to my husband Allen Cox by Ellen Antonie-Hamm in 1977. Go West High connections! We have two wonderful daughters, Whitney (New Zealand) and Braeden (Portland, OR). Fun fact: both of my daughters had Jeff Gusinow’s wife Susan as a teacher in elementary school in Eugene, Oregon during the time I was working at the University of Oregon. We are loving our life in Paso Robles, CA located in beautiful California wine country. Paso Robles is on the central coast midway between LA and San Francisco about 25 minutes from the Pacific ocean
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): I currently work very part-time as an emeritus professor, supported by federal grants at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. I enjoy working with my graduate students and the fact that I can do most of my teaching from California. My self-supporting status means I can avoid faculty meetings and committee assignments – bliss. In addition to my work in Tennessee, I do some work in New Zealand at the University of Canterbury and have spent about half of my time in the last two years in Christchurch. At home, I enjoy working on our house (we bought a mid-century style home in need of updating), gardening, spending time in the area at wine-tastings and art events, and enjoying meals with friends.
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): Like many of us, I plan to travel extensively over the next several years. One of my activities during the pandemic was organizing a file of places I hope to visit. I’m also planning to purchase a bucket list car before I’m too old to enjoy driving.
