Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): | After High School I attended UW-Madison, took a break and traveled to Latin America for a few years, resumed study and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Latin American Studies. I attended Graduate School at Michigan State, finishing my Master’s degree in Labor Relations in 1979. Later I returned to school in Cleveland receiving a Master’s degree in Business Administration in 2007. My career has been in Human Resources: DC, Wisconsin, Texas, Mexico, New York, Illinois, and Ohio; where I’ve seen it all, done it all, and rejoice in retirement that I “don’t” remember it all! |
---|---|
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): | I met my husband, Tim in Graduate School, we married in 1984. I have a stepdaughter and three sons: No grandchildren yet…. Despite the bad rap, Cleveland gets it’s been a great place to raise our family. |
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): | I joined my retired husband in October 2019. I found that doing home projects is too stressful when it’s the only thing on the agenda. I now work part-time in HR and volunteer with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate.) I spin, practice yoga, walk, and do a Century Bicycle ride in June every year. My advice to all, JUST KEEP MOVING! |
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): | I hope to travel more post-pandemic. Never been to Europe, Africa, India, or much of Asia. I have plenty of places to visit. I am open to advice on how to narrow down the world I want to experience! |
Karla Boreiko (Dunn)

Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): | Retired from position as autism consultant with the Chapel Hill Carrboro school system. I worked at providing support for kids in the regular education classroom and support for teachers and parents. I miss my “kids” so much I am back subbing. |
---|---|
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): | My husband Craig, 46 years married this coming December. I have a son Nathan and daughter Alyssa. My grandson, Jack will be 2 in August. Craig and I lived in married student housing when first married, then LA and Craig took a job in RTP fir a “bit”. The bit went until he set up his own consulting firm, but we are still in NC. |
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): | Craig is still working and I am trying to figure out being retired. It turns out retirement is not a great match for me. I’m now subbing, gardening, exercising (weight training and HIIT classes) and still involved in the dog world. We bred, showed and loved Rhodesian Ridgebacks until getting in and out of the whelping box helped diagnose the arthritis in my knees. Craig worked internationally for years so my travels have been extensive and amazing. Seeing the world was the biggest educational experience I have had. It also made Craig calling me from a fantastic little bistro in Paris while I was doing laundry a bit more acceptable….. Craig and I also love to cook, so exploring the world of food and upping our chef skills. |
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): | Trips to Vietnam, Lithuanian, Iceland and always to Italy. Would love to buy a second home in Italy. |

Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): | '79 Graduated from UW-River Falls, with a BS Degree in Soil Science focus in Horticulture. I participated in a '76 life changing Study Abroad Program in the Netherlands. I studied Land Reclamation in the Polder Lands while in a family stay. Additionally I had a 3-month Eurail Pass to travel Europe. And in the program I met Berdell, my wife of 43 years. '79-'89 I developed a Landscape Business apart of the sod farm on the 80 acre farm 20 miles West of Madison where we lived in an historic Log Home. '90 I started at Holy Wisdom Monastery, located on the north side of Lake Mendota on a hilltop that overlooks Madison. My interests in learning about the Monastery were instantly met by the community of two women monks welcoming me with a deeply felt respect. I was introduced to an equally supportive staff. The women were a wonderful role model for leadership and progressive social change. To support our efforts in advancement, we all met with engaging presenters challenging each other on a new level of personal development in team building programs. We worked in unity and had a role in the Mission of the Benedictine Women. "Care for the Earth" In '94 many people were involved in focus groups, the impetuses to develop a 10 Year Plan of Land Restoration. This was the led up in a hands-on work experience in my mentorship with the Park Manager doing Prairie Restoration at Gov. Nelson St Park just across Hwy M. for several seasons. HWM was later recognize for achievements done by so many people. I liked my working guiding hundreds of volunteers the educational message for doing green work outdoors in nature guiding the hundreds of volunteers in restoring over 100 acres of land to prairies, Oak Savanna, and the improvements made to watershed and water quality of Lake Mendota. |

Once our kids finished high school, I was looking for a change, so in 1999 when we got the chance, moved up to Great Falls Montana. We loved Montana, but work got in the way and they moved us back to Utah, where we still live today. |
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): | I retired in September 2020 and now I spend time golfing, skiing and flyfishing. We enjoy hiking, days at the lake and cruising around the backroads. Basically, anything that gets us outside and keeps us moving. |
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): | Together Kat and I have had some great adventures, skiing, boating, riding jet skis and camping with the kids. Some of our greatest adventures have been riding motorcycles all over the western United States and Canada. So, the top of my bucket list is to keep our adventures going for as long as we can. As for travel, there’s a lot of America that we haven’t explored. So, travelling our great country is high on the list, with a trip to Scotland when we can work it in. |
