Dave Coyne

Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): Most classmates probably won't remember me as I only went to Madison West my senior year and only needed a couple of classes to graduate. I worked full time at St. Mary's Hospital most of my senior year. I went to UW Madison for a couple of years before starting work. At age 19 I was flipping houses before that was even a thing! I have been self employed most of my life, starting a number of successful businesses. My first job was working for an insurance and investment company. I started a restaurant/bar on Regent Street across from Camp Randall called Grace E's Grille named after my oldest daughter. We were the first restaurant in our category to receive a 4 star rating by the Capital Times. I lived on Lake Monona at the time and decided I wanted to raise my girls in the country so I sold my restaurant and home and bought a farm outside of Barneveld, Wisconsin. For about 10 years I raised and bred horses. I spent those same years as head of the equine board for Iowa County 4H. I started a construction company, ABCO Contracting, LLC and built it up to a point where we were doing federal contracts all over the United States. I recently semi retired from that company and only do a small amount of work retrofitting homes to make them accessible for the handicap. I have a hard time actually acting like I'm retired! In addition to that company, my wife and I started A Helping Heart, Inc. which sets up and staffs homes for people with disabilities, mostly on the autism scale. We still run that business supporting numerous clients in the Madison and Mt. Horeb area. We employ about 40 to 50 employees with that company.
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): Married to Joy. I have two daughters, Grace and Hannah. Joy has a daughter, Alisha, and a son, Aaron. No grandkids yet. (I am way too young to have grandkids!) The thing I am most proud of is that my two daughter's both are college grads with my oldest being the valedictorian of her class! While successful in business, I couldn't manage to graduate from college myself! Maybe there's still time...not!
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): When not working, we spend almost every available day off riding our horses in multiple states. Last year alone we logged almost 2,000 miles while trail riding on horseback. We currently live in our 9,000 sq. ft. log home(a little overkill!) which I built as a model for the home building part of my business overlooking Blue Mounds State Park. We are very excited that we just purchased 160 acres of off grid property in the San Juan National Forest outside of Pagosa Springs Colorado where we will trail ride, hike, camp, and hunt as often as possible. Pagosa Springs is about 30 miles away and has the deepest hot sulphur springs in the world. Great for old aching joints!
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): We are very lucky to be pretty much living the dream now. We take numerous trips every year exploring new areas. We hope to find someone to take over our business, A Helping Heart in the next few years. (Taking applications! LOL) We feel very strongly to keep the business going as we have many families that depend on A Helping Heart. I hope to make the reunion, but we are usually traveling with our horses in the summer months so I am not sure if we will make it.

Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): Married Deborah Heaney from Maple Bluff in 1983, and had three terrific kids, Georgia, Finn and Peter. No grandkids but for two standard schnauzers.
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): Living on the east side of Madison with a new partner, Jamie England. Still skiing, skating, swimming, mountain biking regularly, often with Remington and Schiro, doing an occasional stage show and auditioning for commercials and corporate acting work. Still get the occasional job, but as we all know, we are no longer in the leading-man demographic. Years ago, my agent called me and said "I have a great job for you, great money, but I don't know if you're going to want to take it." I said, "Well, what is it?" She said, "Depends." I said, "Depends on what?" "No ... Depends." Sheesh, I was only 48.
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): Let's see ... live in Portugal? Merida? Amsterdam?Ecuador? Get the motor home and hit the road? The sailboat? More Europe, for sure.

(e.g., education, first job, occupation): I attended UW-Madison and graduated with a degree in Anthropology in 1977 then moved to Oregon doing some construction before taking a job on a US Forest Service fire fighting crew in New Mexico. I moved back to Oregon in 1980 and enrolled in the Elementary Education program at the University of Oregon. After graduating in 1982 I began teaching first in Roseburg and then in rural NW Oregon. I taught first through fourth grade but spent most of my years in third grade. In 2010 I took a job overseas at an international school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My family and I spent three years there and returned to Oregon in 2012. I did some subbing and taught at a small cooperative school until retiring in 2014.
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): I married my wife, Ann, in 1989. We lived in a small house in the rural community of Brownsmead, Oregon until 1997 when we bought a larger craftsman style house in Astoria, Oregon. We rented our house while we were overseas and then moved back into it on our return and have lived there since. In 2002 we adopted our daughter, MeiLi, from China. She is will be a senior this fall at Pacific University, majoring in Chemistry.
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): Since childhood I have been a writer, mostly of poetry but also a few short stories and non-fiction. See my website jamesdott.com for details and examples of my work.

We have a large yard and garden space here in Astoria and a small flock of chickens.

I am a volunteer producer and programmer for our local community radio station, KMUN. Since 1984 I have been a reader for a kids' program called Bedtime Stories. During the pandemic live programming was shut down so all shows had to be prerecorded. I did the editing for my own show and seven other readers.

I have had a few roles in local community theater productions.

We bought a Sprinter RV a few years ago and have been camping with friends around Oregon and Washington. Last summer we drove it to Colorado for my niece's wedding.

While in Malaysia we traveled around Southeast Asia visiting Bali, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. We more recently we have traveled to Hawaii and Costa Rica.

We like to hike near and far. I enjoy crabbing and digging razor clams.

I read widely, enjoy a good beer, seeing a play and listening to live music.
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): We have tickets to several shows at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (very similar to American Players Theater in Spring Green) in southern Oregon in September.

We are looking forward to traveling to Hawaii and Costa Rica again in next year. Perhaps a trip to the redwoods this fall.

I hope to get my next book published in the next year and get started on another project or finally finish the murder mystery I started 30 years ago.

One elusive goal is clearing our basement of years of inherited and acquired accumulation.

We continue to add native plants to our yard.

Ellen Emmitt (Roenneburg)

Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): BA-Education, UW-Madison
Taught K-8 and Special Ed
Went back into school for Nursing shortly after my father was diagnosed with cancer.
BS-Nursing, UW-Madison
I have worked mostly ICU, telemetry, and Hospice, for close to 30 years. I did 'traveling nursing' for three years. Also, I am a 'Clinical Specialist"/RN, working in surgery providing specialty services of PRP-Platelet Rich Plasma, and stem cells-(BMAC)-Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate. I am very much into holistic and preventative medicine, and believe that people should take a certain amount of responsibility for their health and lifestyle choices.
Simultaneously, with my nursing career, I also had the opportunity to be an entrepreneur and own my own Kaffeehaus/Gift Shoppe in Germantown, WI, called "Beanjuice Kaffeehaus"
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): Widowed, one daughter
Four grandchildren, the eldest of which just graduated with her Masters this last May, and whom I had the pleasure of backpacking throughout Panama with, for almost 2 weeks this past June.
The second eldest is an electrician. The third in the line-up works for a concrete company and has been known frequently to think "out of the box". The youngest of my grandchildren, co-owns a farm and business known as "B's Bouquets" in the West Bend area of Wisconsin.
I have five great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.

I have lived in several states since high school, including Texas, Colorado, Arizona, California, and Wisconsin, plus several other states while 'traveling nursing'.
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): I currently live in Delavan, WI and am still working in surgery as a 'Clinical Specialist'. I am not looking to retire anytime soon, as I love the idea of using our own bodies to help heal ourselves.

I am currently in the process of setting up an AirBNB in the Delavan/Lake Geneva area entitled "Get Hooked Cabina"-Glamping at it's finest.

Hobbies: I love to paint(mostly watercolors), as well as many other creative endeavors. I love propagating plants and am an avid gardener. My garden(no pesticides, no processing), provides me with food not only throughout the summer, but all winter long, as well.

Travels: I have had the pleasure of traveling and spending time in most of our beautiful United States. I have traveled to parts of Central America, South America, Canada, and Europe.
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): Before my father died, he always wanted to go back to the Philippines. My granddaughter and I were planning a trip earlier this year, 2021, but because of COVID, weren't able to go. Someday, I am hoping to go as my father's proxy.

Last, but not least, I've always wanted to go to Australia to ride in a kangaroo's pocket. Okay, we all have our fantasies. This one is mine!

But, seriously, on the home front, I would be totally satisfied and happy to put some of these creative ideas that are running around in my head into projects and be a part of a community coop/business with several artists and take the time to do a lot more art work.
