Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): | Live life / See the World I took the scenic route straight out of West—which included a few dead ends, but mainly meandering side roads with abundant opportunity to explore new places, meet people, and dabble in a variety of languages. Back in 1972 I had made a vow to sample life for at least a year in at least five interesting places just to see what I could see, while figuring out what I wanted to do when I grew up. To that end: 1974: Baaring Folkehojskule, Asperup, Denmark; ’75-76: Denver, CO for camera & photographic technology school; ’78-79: Hollywood, CA (in the same building with Tim Athan, Monty Schiro, and Gary Geisler); ’80-81: June Lake, CA, population 619 – with Yosemite Nat’l Park a hike away (and me president of the volunteer fire department?!) ; ’83: Florence, Italy, where I met my dear future wife Caroline (though we could communicate only in rudimentary Italian); and ‘89-90: Back to Caroline's native Zurich, Switzerland, with our first child, Gabe. Education. WORK? From matriculation to graduation, my undergrad "program" at UW stretched from 1974 to 1999, via a half dozen majors: Astronomy, Journalism, Language Studies, Education, ESL…) and finally back to English. Meanwhile I made my living repairing photographic equipment in Madison, in California, and in Switzerland. You have to imagine episodes of college woven and stuffed loosely in all the gaps. |
---|---|
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): | Caroline and I were married in Madison in 1986, and Gabe arrived in 1987. We moved to Switzerland on Gabe's second birthday, where I worked for Nikon. Back in Madison again, our second child, Henry, came along in 1992. |
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): | All these years later, Caroline and I still call Madison home, and I’m beginning to think it might not be such a bad place to finally grow up, and old. Caroline phased out of her occupational therapy career five years ago to manage Olin House, the UW chancellor’s residence; Gabe is a food chemist with Eurofin Scientific’s foods testing division, and Henry is an itinerant glass artist living his dream in glorious technicolor, in a converted ambulance with his dog Millie, in Boulder, CO. My lifelong, back-burnered dream of becoming a teacher finally came to fruition in 2008, when I completed an MA in progressive education with secondary teaching certification in English. I actually student taught and subbed back at West, but my first contracted teaching job was at Madison Memorial—until I switched in 2013 to an alternative high school in Middleton, which was a much better fit for my inherently alternative sensibilities. I absolutely loved teaching, both with my own kids and with my students. |
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): | I reluctantly retired from teaching with the onslaught of COVID at the end of the 2019/20 school year, and recently purchased a van that I look forward to converting into a camper. |

Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): | Graduation from University of Wisconsin and began a 42 year banking career in Eugene Oregon. First job was a management training program with First State Bank of Oregon. Met my wife, Susan, on the board of Planned Parenthood, we were engaged within 2 weeks and married in 6 months. We were the first couple to ever get married on the stage at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in 1986. Two boys- Sander born in 1988 married to Amy living in Portland Oregon after a stint in NYC. Alex born in 1990 and lives in Eugene. |
---|---|
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): | Diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma at age 52. Fortunate to still be alive; heavily involved in the LLS. Was a national spokesperson for many years and active fundraising in Eugene. Through a client I ended up knowing the 1960’s band The Cowsills, one of the remaining brothers would come up to play with his son, who lives in Eugene, at many of our fundraisers |
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): | Retired in 2018 and continue to concentrate on travel. Cancer has encouraged me to start my sightseeing earlier. We have been to China, Switzerland, France, Italy, Australia, Russia, Mexico, Bora Bora, Iceland. |
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): | Happy to wake up each day. I am fortunate to have a loving family. Susan is a saint and my kids bring enormous joy and memories |

Mark Hambrecht

Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): | Two semesters at the UW right out of high school. Then work at multiple trades throughout the 70's (and a goodly amount of partying), finally settling into carpentry, a handy, sometimes exciting trade to have in your back pocket. Realizing that as things went the world was not to be my oyster, I went back and finished my BS degree at the UW. I then worked 25+ years in construction design and development at a very large bureaucratic entity in Wisconsin (my only claim to fame is my name in bronze on an office building in northern Wisconsin...that and $5 might get me a cup of decent coffee). On the side, nights and weekends, I designed and built several houses in the Madison area (that was the best of fun). Retired in 2011 with most of my sanity intact and a few nickels in my pocket. |
---|---|
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): | In the mid 80's I married a wonderful woman. We lived in a wonderful house on a wonderful hill in a wonderful woods outside wonderful Verona and raised a wonderful son and a wonderful daughter who are doing wonderfully well. We divorced a decade or so ago, but remained best of friends until her death a few years back. |
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): | Having been retired for a decade, I'm currently living large with the first love of my life (those of you from Van Hise may have an inkling who that might be). We live in a little hootch on two wooded acres up nort' in Wisconsin (for the time being). We enjoy the flora and fauna, a little hiking, a little biking, snow shoeing, motorcycle touring, cooking (and eating too much). I still play guitar a little, albeit slide/resonator. I even do a little recording once in a while to satisfy the unfulfilled rock star within. |
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): | I am truly humbled by many of the bios I have read here on myevent, but still, as Joe W. told me, “Life's been good to me so far”. And on it goes. |
Ellen Hamm (Antonie)

Work life? (e.g., education, first job, occupation): | Upon graduation from West High, I attended the University of Wisconsin in fine arts until 1975. I moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1976 and enrolled at the University of Oregon. In my senior year I added Art Education to my studies. The movie, Animal House, was filmed in Eugene and I got to be an extra. I am forever 23 on the silver screen! Graduating in 1980, I moved with my fiancé, Mike Hamm, to Laguna Beach, CA. Teaching jobs were scarce and I ended up working with the elderly as an Activity Director. It was basically being paid to bring joy to octogenarians (+-) and their families. Mike and I lived in Laguna for a year. We missed the Pacific North West and moved to to Seattle. We were married in the summer of 1981 at Mt Hood’s Timberline Lodge. Teaching jobs continued to be few and far between so I worked for Daniel Smith Art Supplies for 5 years. We had our first son and then the second. Right in the thick of all this, I started a salad dressing company, Renaissance. My product joined Paul Newman on the shelves for 3 years. We closed shop after it became too much to market it beyond Seattle. I was able to be a stay at home mom. I went back to college after the boys were older to get my K-12 teaching certificate. I then taught pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade. While I was teaching, I got a master’s degree in the arts in education. I retired early and have enjoyed “ground hog day” for the past six years. |
---|---|
Family life? (e.g., spouse, kids/grandkids, friends, places lived): | My husband and I have been living in Seattle, Washington over the past 41 years. We have two sons, Ian(36), Logan (34). Both sons are married. Ian and his wife, Alexandra, live in Seattle about 5 minutes away. They have two sons, so we are grandparents! Logan and his wife, Sarah, live in London. We hope that we can travel to see them this fall. |
Doing today? (e.g., where do you live, working or retired, hobbies, travels): | Our home is on the Salish Sea (Puget Sound). We see whales, porpoise, sail boats, submarines, freighters, yachts, and more. I am a life-long artist and enjoy making art almost everyday. My husband and I have been lucky in life and have done some amazing travels. The high lights would be the Galápagos Islands, the Amazonian jungle in Ecuador, and a safari in South Africa...we did a white shark cage dive too! Not to be repeated. |
Bucket list? (e.g., plans for the future, travel): | Travel to many other destinations is something we want to do. A second trip to Africa is in the works. On the home front we want to be involved with our grandkids. Mike and I are both artists so we will continue to create. I am happy to be in the “67 Year Old Club.” |
