Steven P. "Goldy" Thorson, age 51, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2006, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Steve was born on Aug. 11, 1954, in Madison, the son of Lester and Barbara Thorson. He attended Randall Elementary School, West Jr. High, Madison Community School (MCS), and graduated from Malcolm Shabazz High School.

Steve was a talented musician and liked to play guitar and sing with his friends; he was a member of the bands Sal Sax, and The Gibraltar Rock Ramblers. In 1985, he moved to Harlingen, Texas, to be closer to his family. Steve enjoyed fishing the waters around South Padre Island with his buddies. He was also an avid birdwatcher and had an impressive life list of species that he had seen. Steve was easy to like and a loyal friend who will be mourned by many.

Steve was preceded in death by his father; his brothers, Ken and Bill; and two good friends, Stacy Poole and Pete Kenworthy. Services for Steve will be held on Monday evening, July 24, 2006, at TRINITY FUNERAL HOME and will be followed by a memorial jam session at Philosopher Dave's in Harlingen.

Remembering Steve today as a fellow free-school and childhood friend. I remember his brother, our coming of age years which were turbulent and exciting, Mickie’s Dairy Bar where I think his uncle worked, his kind acceptance of misfit kids, his curiosity, his rolling abilities, his music-making, his cute coolness.

Oh dear Goldie. So many fun memories, smoking Marlboro or Winston cigarettes in various hippie vans, listening to music, Mifflin Street parties, his uncle at Mickey's Dairy Bar, fun at Bloodgood's farm (?), his adorable good looks. I regret I didn't connect some how during the years I knew he was suffering, sick in Belize and Texas. And then I heard he was gone. He was a bright light for a long time.
