Judy and I were in grade school together at Grand Haven Christian School. We both took piano lessons from the same teacher, an Estonian immigrant whose house remained made out of cinder blocks, waiting for the bricks that never came. Judy started playing piano three years after me but quickly excelled and then began playing the bassoon. We attended the same church growing up and she would share her music and as she played bassoon for the Coast Guard band as an adult she often returned to Grand Haven for the Coast Guard festival. It is a beautiful thing to embrace the gift given and share it with others.

Judy Karsten was a lovely and gifted person. Ironically, I got to know Judy not so much in school, but during the summer of '76. I served with her on SWIM, Webster, NY in a smaller "outreach" church.
What a beautiful soul. Her heart was in instrumental music, and along with her irrepressible positive nature, she soared in sharing her gifts with the church and neighboring community. And later she went on to serve in a US military band during her adult years. Truly missed.
