Comment: I graduated from the University of Tennessee, with a degree in Deaf Education, after working as a dorm counselor at Tennessee School for the Deaf while attending classes at UT.

After graduation, I worked at the National Captioning Institute, in Falls Church, VA, as a caption editor. (We won an Emmy award for the work that we did for PBS.)

I met my husband, Dewey Blyth, who was an Army captain at that time, on a blind date in 1982. We were married a year later and lived in Seattle, WA, West Point, NY, Grafenwoehr, Germany, Mannheim, Germany, Ft Riley, KS, Northern VA several times, and finally Yorktown, VA. We have traveled all over the world and have one son, Ted, who is now 39.

After 23 years in the Army, we settled in Yorktown, VA, where Dewey retired as an O6 and now works for the Department of Defense. I enjoyed working at Colonial Williamsburg for five years giving tours, and then worked at our local YMCA for 20 years as office manager and the assistant to the executive director.

Our son and his wife and two daughters (ages 10 and 13) live in Richmond so we are lucky enough to be able to see them (and their hockey games!) regularly.

Life is good!

Comment: I still live in Denver. I went to UNC. Married to Joe for almost 46 years. Have two amazing sons - John and Michael, and two great daughter-in-laws. Two grandchildren - Grayden, 14 and Finnley, 9. I am grateful they all live here. I had just planned on retiring from Denver Public Schools after 37 years, but Joe suddenly and unexpectedly died from a pulmonary embolism. Grief became my companion. Life happens. Retirement plans sadly changed in the blink of an eye. I decided to continue teaching. Life is moving forward - finding purpose and meaning again in a life without my husband. My three sisters are still my best friends. My Mom and Dad (Dad died in ‘87/Mom last July) created a family that would become a big family of 40 - with kids, grandkids and spouses! There are a lot of us! Being with all of them is one of my greatest joys! Still love going to the mountains, hiking, theater, concerts, sporting events, restaurants, reading, singing, my church, sharing dinner and wine with friends! My granddaughter skates with the Colorado Figure Skating Club…so I’m an ice skating groupie. My grandson will be going to Littleton High School this month; my oldest son is the baseball coach there. I’ll be back in the bleachers watching him play sports in the same bleachers where Joe, John and Mike went to high school; and where Joe & I sat for seven years watching our boys play football, basketball and baseball! We spent years traveling the country and Europe watching our sons play college and European pro-league baseball; and now I follow my grandkids’ many, many activities and sports! It’s all come full circle…and I’m finding pocketfuls of happiness and joy in the journey!
