NEWPORT NEWS - On July 15, 2011, God sent out an emergency request for a special angel and Shirley Ann Martin answered the call.
Born on Jan. 22, 1955, to Arlean Moses Martin and Richard Allen Martin Sr., in Warwick County, Va., (Newport News), she attended Newsome Park Elementary, Carver Elementary and Carver High Schools. She graduated with highest honors from Warwick High School in 1973, ranking #12 out of a class of approximately 680 students. Continuing her honor student status, she attended Virginia Commonwealth University in 1973 and later transferred to Hampton Institute (Hampton University).
She was employed at the Williamsburg DMV for the past seven years and was a member of Bethel Temple Church in Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Allen Martin Sr. and mother, Arlean Moses Martin.
She is survived by two sisters, Jane A. Tucker and Dori K. Martin both of Newport News, Va.; a special adopted sister in Christ, Wilhelmenia Sumner of Newport News, Va.; five brothers, Richard A. Martin Jr. (Ann) of Phoenix, Ariz., Darry Martin and Victor Martin both of Newport News, Va., Keith D. Martin (Patricia) of Chicago, Ill., and Edward L. Martin of Washington, D.C.; a special nephew, Larry B. Tucker Jr. (Bobby) of Newport News, Va.; a special niece, Tashiba Martin of Hampton, Va.; three nieces; three great-nieces; and three great-nephews.
