Margaret Artis Jackson died on Friday, Aug. 13, 1999. She was born Oct. 1, 1954, in Suffolk, and she and her family moved to Newport News in 1956. Margaret was educated in the Newport News school system, graduating from Warwick High School in 1973. She received two certificates in early childhood education from Thomas Nelson Community College in May 1999. She was a sales associate in the hardware department at Sears, Roebuck and Co. and a substitute teacher for Newport News Public Schools. She was a member of the Solid Rock Church in the city of Newport News, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, praise worship leader, president of the usher board and treasurer of the usher fund and choir fund. Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Leon Jackson; daughters, LaTasha Artis, Essence Jackson and Kelanda Jackson, all of Newport News, and Shawana Hawkins of Hampton; father, James M. Artis of Hampton; mother, Audrey M. Artis of Newport News; sisters, Grate D. Artis of Newport News, Valerie D. Woodard and Sheila R. Hall of Hampton; brothers, James M. Artis Jr. of Hampton; and Glenn D. Artis of Newport News; grandchildren, LaChay Artis, JoQuan Scott, Ebony Scott and Sterling Hawkjns; brother-in-law, Stanley S. Woodard of Hampton; sisters-in-law, Alice C. Artis of Hampton and Diann Artis of Newport News; and a host of nieces and nephews.
