Steven Lee Phillips, 26 of Hilton Head, S.C., died Thursday in University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Born in Newport News, he attended Warwick High School where he was on the cross-country team. A Navy veteran, he was a self-employed carpenter.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Irma C. Bell of Newport News; a sister, Mrs. Debra Mullins of Hampton; two brothers, Michael W. Phillips of Annandale and Keith R. Phiillips of Hilton Head; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Selden J. Carter of Hampton.
