1954-09-04 2023-09-08
Paul Thomas Morgan, 69, of Newport News, VA passed into the arms of our Lord on September 8, 2023 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Born alongside his twin brother David on September 4, 1954, to Aylett and Franka Morgan, Paul was a lifelong resident of Newport News. He met his wife, Judy Schoonover, at Warwick High School, and following graduation from Ferguson High School in 1973, he attended Chowan College and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1977. He went on to receive his Master's of Education from the George Washington University in 1997.
Paul married Judy in August of 1975, and together they raised three children in the house where Paul grew up. Paul was a lifelong educator, from PE Teacher to Assistant Principal, and spent his life shaping the lives of countless young people in Newport News. He coached baseball, was an umpire and referee, worked for Parks and Recreation, and spent several summers with the Achievable Dream Program in its founding days. Always on the move, Paul came out of retirement and, until August, was a valued member of the crews working to maintain recreational fields in Newport News and at the McReynolds Sports Complex in York County.
Paul loved his family, particularly his grandchildren, his Green Bay Packers, and always, through ups and downs, his Virginia Tech Hokies. Paul played third base for the Hokies, and he stayed in contact with his Hokie teammates throughout the years. He was an avid fisherman, accomplished carpenter, lover of nature, and always willing to help anyone – especially his wife and children, with their ever-present list of home improvement projects. Paul loved to work with his hands. Whether it was in the garden or woodworking, he was always busy and his lawn was always immaculate.
Paul will be missed by many, but especially his wife of 48 years Judy, children: Karen (Matt) Hermansky, Brett (Benjamin), Randy (Meagan), and grandchildren, Braden, Landon, Anna, Katie, Kora, Vivian, Nelson and Skipper. He is also survived by his brothers David (Deedle) Morgan, Dickie (Valerie) Morgan, and sister Suzanne (Lawson) Drinkard and many other family members including Elliott (Dianne) Schoonover, Mark (Christine) Schoonover, Bob Blakeslee, and Janice (Kevin) O'Kane. Paul was also a very special uncle to many nieces and nephews, especially to his nieces Jennifer (Jason, Justin, Janelle and Jessica) Barsness and Amanda (Chris, Annabelle, Bresyln and Layne) Crockett.
