New London- Dwight D. ""Dan"" Gross, 88, of New London entered eternal life suddenly July 19, 2023, surround by his loving family. He was born Feb. 7, 1935, in Camden, Maine, the son of the late Dwight P. and Alice (Swazey) Gross.
Growing up in Maine, he attended local schools and graduated from Rockport High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954 serving on board the USS Sullivan during the Korean War, during his time onboard Dan boxed in the Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1958. Dan work for Electric Boat, Colt Firearms, and last working at Wyman & Gordon. He had his own bands, Danny & the Gadabouts, and played for many years for Roger Hart & the Misfits at the Travel Lodge, and the Coast Guard Academy. He was an accomplished musician, and songwriter, his dream was to go to Nashville. His favorite guitarist was Django Reinhardt, and he must be playing his guitar in Heaven.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather with a great sense of humor. He loved his cats, Toby and Monty and was an avid bird watcher and nature lover. A member of the National Audubon Society, and his poems about birds, were published in 2022 in the Society Newsletter and his favorite bird was the Cardinal. He was an eminent domain activist and wrote three songs, Little Pink House, Shame-Shame Eminent Domain, New London Blues, the songs are listed in The Library of Congress, and he was a member of L.O.T. founded by Larry and Barbara Hample. He enjoyed fly fishing and gardening, playing pool on teams in New London and throwing darts in Mystic.
He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Gloria Colasanto, of 36 years, they were officially married in Sept. 3, 2014; his daughter, Lori Clements and husband Rick; two granddaughters, Sierra and Lauren; a granddaughter-in-law, Kaylie; stepbrother Joseph Sousa; stepsisters, Elaine Reyna and husband Sonny, Diane Haywood; sister in-law Aida Fritz and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his son, Danny Todd; stepmother Hilda Gross; half-sister Diana Duke; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, sister and brothers-in-law. He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.
