ROCKLAND — Barbara Elizabeth Grigor, 86, died peacefully, following a long illness, on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, at Breakwater Commons in Rockland.
Barbara was born in Rockport on Feb. 16, 1938, the daughter of Ernest Sr. and Inez Davis Douglas. Educated locally, she was a 1958 graduate of Rockport High School.
On Nov. 7, 1959, Barbara married Robert Guria Grigor, whom she had met at the Rockland Roller-Rink.
After the birth of their first daughter, Gloria, in 1960, the couple was gifted a seven-room home in Rockland by Mr. Grigor’s father. With Robert’s hard work and construction skills, they worked tirelessly to make a beautiful home for their family. They welcomed a second daughter, Dorothy in 1962, and then Linda in 1964. For over 30 years they remained in their Camden Street home together until Mr. Grigor’s passing in 2003.
An accomplished seamstress, Barbara worked for over 17 years at Van Baalens as a stitcher. Following the closing of that business, she worked making children’s clothing at Common Sense Designs in Nobleboro. She finished her career as the seamstress for Park Street Laundromat.
A woman of strong faith, she was a long-time member of the Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church. Her daughters remember attending with their mother as young girls.
Barbara’s loving nature and warm spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Grigor; her brothers, Arthur Douglas and his wife Leona, Ernest “Tom” Douglas Jr. and George Douglas; and a sister, Edith Merrifield.
Barbara is survived by sister, Evelyn Taylor of Cushing; her beloved daughters, Gloria Grierson and her husband Wayne of Rockland, Dorothy Grigor and her companion Bob Reed of Rockland and Linda Butterfield and her husband Mark of Seffner, Fla.; her grandchildren, Jason Grigor, Scott Grigor, Tiffany Anthony and Mark Butterfield Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Alannah, Angelina and Kayden Grigor; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Sheila Shorey and her husband Roger; and a large extended family.
