Avis Tolman

ROCKPORT — Avis T. Tolman, 100, a longtime Glen Cove resident, died peacefully on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, at the Sussman House in Rockport. Since 2017, she had resided at Bartlett Woods in Rockland.

Avis was born in Farmington on March 20, 1924, the daughter of Merton L. and Gladys Brown Taylor.

Avis began school in Farmington and the following year attended school in Augusta. After moving to Glen Cove with her family, she attended Rockport schools and graduated from Rockport High School.

She married her childhood sweetheart, Evans L. Tolman, Dec. 29, 1941.

Avis devoted herself to being a homemaker and mother. In 1949, she began working at VanBaalen’s in Rockland, retiring from that job in 1978.

With her husband, Avis enjoyed traveling and camping, from Presque Isle to Florida.

She enjoyed playing cards every evening and square dancing, but her family and grandchildren were most important in her life.

Other than her parents, Avis was predeceased by her husband in 2006; and a granddaughter, Lisa Wotton.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, James L. Tolman and Richard A. and Sue M. Tolman, all of Rockport; two grandchildren, Kathy Moody and her husband Alan of Whitefield, N.H., and Alan Tolman of Tampa Bay, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter, Kristy Wotton, of West Rockport; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 8, at the Glen Cove Cemetery, Warrenton Avenue, Rockport.
