Grady H. Shelton, 42, of Vashon Island, Wash., died of respiratory ailment there on Feb. 13. Memorial services will be held Saturday in Vashon Island.

Dr. Shelton was born in Memphis, Tenn., and had lived in Ames for several years before moving to the Seattle area in 1981.

He was a veterinarian and an affiliate associate professor at the University of Washington. He wrote and lectured nationwide on the subject of the feline immunodeficiency virus and, in 1994, founded Feline Retrovirus and Oncology Referral Service.

He is survived by his wife, Starla; a daughter, Sydney Shelton, and a son, Ben, all of Vashon Island; his parents, Neil and Mildren Shelton of Ames; a sister, Marcia Ward, of Marshalltown; and a brother, Jeffrey, of Woodinville, Wash.

Adams Funeral Home in Ames is handling local arrangements.
