When I first met Doug, the Sandberg family lived just a short block from me in New Brighton on what was Hwy 8, before 88 was in built. Although they were in New Brighton, because his dad worked for SAV the kids came to SAV for school. Doug was an eclectic kid with lots of interest and play ideas. He, Peter, Carl, my brothers Brad, Jeff and I built a mud and plywood fort in my home out feilds, and we had a large enough lot to play softball, even if there were only four or five of us to play. Eventually even built a big tree house fort, where we played Knights and Moors, with many battles ending as he sun was going down and Marion's voice calling Doug home. Doug had many sport interests and intellectual pursuits while in school. He was the reason I tried baseball in eight grade, I wasn't good, but wanted to play with my best friend. We did play football together and he had some spectacular catches as tight-end. Sadly we lost touch when he traveled to France to study and teach. We only caught up once at the 25h re-union, when I learned he had moved to Austin, MN and was teaching and working part-time as a fork lift operator, and he had sons. It was always great to see Doug, and Marion and Colonel, as I picked him up on the walk up to school. Doug was an intellectual who was ready to debate everything and anything. They were fun talks, but I'll miss seeing him. Luckily I caught his obituary and attended to support Dave, Carl and Peter. Rest in peace my dear friend, I hope the demons have finally left you alone.
