Highlights of your last 50 years: | I moved to Alaska with my wife, Donna O'Dowd-Robb in 1978. Taught low incidence special education on Kodiak Island for a year before we relocated to an Eskimo village on the mighty Kuskowkwim River for a full immersion cultural experience. After four years we moved again to North Pole where I taught at North Pole Middle School for the next twenty-nine years in special ed, reg ed and administration. We have two children who were raised to embrace the hunting and fishing lifestyle. After retiring and facing arctic winter number 40, we decided to move yet again, but this time to the western slope of Colorado's high red desert country. Colorado grand kids are way more fun than freezing in the dark! I miss Alaska terribly, but don't regret the move for a second. Donna and I now spend our time exploring western Colorado and Utah's red rock country. She is a mega quilter, and I make fishing rods more often than I go fishing. Fishing now is Grandpa keeps the kids safe from hooks and going overboard. Good work if you can get it! Note: then photo above taken in the village. Kalskag village. Pertty awesome adventure. |
Share a high school memory: | I owe my whole career to Dale Tramp who connected me with the AHS Volunteer Club and the opportunity to spend time in elementary and special education schools in Ames. |

Highlights of your last 50 years: | Greetings fellow classmates! Highlights of my senior year were performing in Guys and Dolls; and the Health Occupations Course at Mary Greeley Hospital. I remember school nurse Penny Tiffany looked shocked when I told her I was not going to nursing school. (I didn’t tell her, but I was stagestruck). A few years later I had a BA in Theater and spent some years performing and teaching in the Twin Cities. In 1980 I followed other family members to Washington State and enjoyed the Seattle dance scene while I worked at the Region 10 EPA Library, Cornish College of the Arts, National Audubon’s Lobby Office, Swedish Hospital, and participated in efforts to pass the WA Wilderness Bill. Switching gears in the late 1980’s I entered Library School at the University of Washington to become a medical librarian. My love of medical information made working at the Health Sciences Library at UW a dream come true. Unfortunately, its basement location gave me “sick building syndrome.” After I graduated I got married and moved to the suburbs. Gardening became my passion, particularly with native plants. I also served as director of my family foundation dedicated to creating and preserving important wildlife corridors in the Northwest. Divorced in 1998, and with my health not improved, I started thinking about southern locations to escape to. Looking all over the west coast (including Mexico) seemed to lead nowhere. Then one winter my brother invited me to his house in Stuart, FL. After that, I was a snowbird from Seattle to various locations in Florida for ten years. In 2010, Melbourne, Florida became my place of residence, and that year I met my partner, RJ Metro, a former emergency doctor who has similar health challenges. Chronic illness put limits on my success with a career, marriage, family, active hobbies or a group of friends, however, I have had blessings that more than make up for these losses. And, as they say, hope springs eternal. I’m willing to try most any energy hack out there! The best part of my high school experience was my involvement with stage productions all three years and working with Wayne Hansen and Al Wiser. It was a blast! Hobbies: container gardening, bible study, solar powered devices. |

Highlights of your last 50 years: | Worked 38 years at Iowa State University. Lived in Colo Iowa much of this time. Raised 2 wonderful girls. Attended Hamilton Business college in '96. Graduated on Honor roll. Funny what being out of high school for 20 years can do for you. I have 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. I get to spend a lot of time at Ames High School because grandchildren participate in activities. Thank heavens there is a Senior pass for all the home events. The new gym is wonderful and getting to the track is much easier now. The girls like to go fishing with me.. especially to empress boys who think that girls don't like touching fish or worms. |

Highlights of your last 50 years: | 50 year highlights in a nutshell: I decided college wasn't for me (for whatever reason that I really can't figure out anymore) so continued to work at Younkers (my DECCA job) for a few years. I met a fabulous guy, Steve Romsey through my friend Denise Kepley Wirth since her husband David and Steve were great friends. We married in 1975 and were blessed with two boys, Eric and Beau. I stayed at home and did all things baby/toddler/elementary kid and loved every minute. Steve was a farmer and the farm crisis of 1985 hit us hard so I soon looked for a job. I was fortunate enough to find one at McFarland Clinic. I recently retired from a 37 year career there as one of the Business Office Managers. My life forever changed when Steve passed away in 2008 but we were blessed with 33 years. I love to travel (hate to pack though) and was fortunate enough to go to Israel (with all my sisters) and Italy (on a tour with a friend) in 2023. I don't know what all is ahead for me in 2024 but know it will involve some trips to Chicago to see my grandson's (ages 18-12) basketball, baseball and hockey games. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in August and I thank the committee for all their hard work! |
Share a high school memory: | I was going to share the story of our drill team standing on the floor of Hilton Coliseum and the music wouldn’t play however Robin beat me to it. I guess it’s etched in our minds. Thank goodness Hilton didn’t draw the crowds then, like it does today! The photo I shared of “me then” is from the one and only time I remember that school closed. Snow storm of April 1973. The photo is from my 17th birthday when it finally started to melt. |

Highlights of your last 50 years: | I have enjoyed 50 fabulous years teaching, raising a family, and cheering on my favorite teams since graduation. My 33-year rewarding teaching career began with an Associates of Arts in elementary education from Waldorf Junior College, where I sang in Waldorf Choir and was in drama, and a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Iowa State. At ISU, I was part of Oratorio Choir and musical “Oklahoma.” My first job was at Southeast Warren Schools, teaching fourth, third and first grades while living in Indianola. I then spent five years in Latimer with CAL Community School District teaching first, directing high school plays, and coaching cheerleading and speech competition. l met my husband Randy Dittmer at CAL and we married in 1985. In 1987, we moved to Liberty, MO,to teach at Liberty Public Schools. I taught first at Franklin Elementary until 1994. Sons Ryne and Carter were born in 1989 and 1994. From 1994 to 2002, I co-owned a sports card and memorabilia store with Randy that hosted 75 Royals, and Chiefs athlete autograph events. I resumed teaching as a substitute in 2002, then full-time in first grade at Elm Grove Elementary School, Fort Osage School District in Independence, MO from 2004 to 2020. In 2007, I completed a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Instruction, was district Teacher of the Year finalist in 2011, and staff talent show director for 16 years. Retiring in 2020, I now tutor reading and math. A passionate sports fan, I’ve been busy cheering on three Chiefs Super Bowl and one Royals World Series victories. I’ve kept close to the Cyclones going to football home and bowl games, and the Big 12 basketball tournaments. My love of music and performance continues, singing in church choir, and going to many concerts and theater performances. |
Share a high school memory: | AHS memories include being in “Guys and Dolls,” when the Hot Box Girls first stripped at rehearsal, surprising everyone with their red shorts and halter tops underneath. Also great memories of Mr. Wiser and Hank, singing with Judy Brink and Kathy Reece in choir, and with Lora York in pop chorus. |

Highlights of your last 50 years: | I was born at home at 314 Elm Street Moorestown New Jersey. Dad got his BA in physics from Drexel Institute of Technology across the river in Philadelphia. At the age of 5 we moved to Bloomington Indiana where Dad got is PhD. At the age of 7 I was told we were moving to Ames Iowa so Dad could work as a research physicist at Iowa State University. I was very upset and cried. When my mother asked why all the tears, I told her I didn’t want to move to Iowa because “They talk funny.” Somehow, I had gotten the idea that all Iowans had a heavy country drawl. We moved into 803 Hodge and I walked the two blocks to Roosevelt Elementary. Along the way I met Carla Tesdal. When I was 8, I asked Carla to be my girlfriend, but she declined the offer as she said my arms were too hairy. Not knowing any better I shaved the hair off with a pair of mom’s sewing scissors. We held hands on the playground for two weeks until, sitting next to her in Mr. Connor’s art class, apparently, I got wheat paste on her girl scout vest … the deal was off! Wheat paste or not, to this day I consider Carla my oldest and dearest friend. My parents split up for a little over a year, during which time I went with Dad and we moved into 602 Stanton just down the street from Crawford Elementary where I attended 5th grade. Well … mom and dad got back together and we moved to 914 5th Street. I finished 6th grade at Roosevelt and attended 7th, 8th, and 9th grade at Central Junior High School, where, yes, I’m that guy, I sat on a diamond point lathe chisel in Mr. Johnson’s wood shop class. It cut my left femoral artery, and had it not been for Mr. Johnsons quick work, I would have blead to death. Blood sprayed out everywhere and all over Mr. Johnson! Honestly, I have never seen so much blood in my whole life, and pray that I never do again! I remember lying on the floor crying in a pool of blood. Poor Rick Philips was standing right next me. I still remember the look of absolute shock on his face! If I traumatized you for life Rick, I’m sorry. Then at Mr. Johnsons order he ran off down the hall to get the principal. I spent the last half of the 9th grade school year chasing, and finally winning the hand of Robin Morgan, the first girl I ever kissed, after tackling her on the front yard of Central Junior High.. We spent several, in my mind, romantic months together, (Can 13-year-olds share “romantic” months together? If you figure that one out, write me!) until, to my surprise, my parents announced that we were moving to Berkeley California as dad had taken a position as a research physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Tears were running down my cheeks the last day we were together, as I watched from our porch, as her mom drove her home. I never saw or spoke to her again. Ahh … puppy love! I loved Ames, I spent weekends riding horses, helping out at the McCormac’s Farm, and playing along the Skunk River. For my parents, Ames was a good place to be “from”. Oh well … to each their own! We actually settled in Walnut Creek, not Berkeley, in a district known as the Saranap. The neighborhood took pride in being “semi-rural”, and in many ways, it was a lot like Ames. My neighbor across the street had a Palomino gelding named Sandy in their corner coral, another neighbor three doors down had two horses in their backyard, and so did my high school girlfriend, who lived five houses up the road. Folks all over the Saranap area kept horses, goats and chickens on their property. It was a common sight to see people riding through the streets as well as the huge open acreage at the edge of the neighborhood. I graduated from Del Valle High School, class of 1974. I later graduated with a two-year degree in Dramatic Arts from Diablo Valley College in 1976 and then began pursuing a career as an actor. I performed in different local theaters in the Bay Area, eventually moving to Los Angeles where I appeared in a number of leading and award-winning roles in theater and some small parts in film and television. I’m still listed in “Who’s Who in Hollywood”. I returned to the Bay Area in 1984 and went back to college. I graduated from Cal State Hayward in 1992 with a BA in Liberal Studies with an emphasis on business management and marketing. I started my second career as a Buyer for Tosco Refining in Martinez. I eventually became a Certified Purchasing Manager working for multiple different cities around the Bay Area. I retired after 19+ years as the Purchasing Agent for the City of Milpitas. When people ask about my wife, I tell them I got the big fantasy; I married the stewardess! Sonia Llamas was a stewardess for Mexicana Airlines when we met. Boy did she look hot in that cute uniform! In truth, I met her, not on the plane, but at a Professionals Guild Dance at the Embassy Suites hotel in Walnut Creek. Sonia was visiting a friend in Orinda, a town nearby. I swear I felt the zing of Cupids arrow the minute I laid eyes on her, it was love at first sight! We dated just six months before getting married in 1992. We had a big American/Mexican wedding in my parents’ backyard complete with a 9-piece Mariachi band! I was truly amazed at how many of her family and friends came up from Mexico City for the wedding! Sonia, only three months younger than me, held college level proficiency certificates in English and Italian. Sonia was also a dancer and the prima ballerina for the Ballet de Mexico at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. She later graduated from Heald School of Business in Concord with a two-year degree in accounting in 2002 and worked for Grabber Construction Supply in Concord for 6 years before switching to her next full time child care and home management career. Sonia is known around the neighborhood as the “Tomato Queen” having grown as many as 26 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes in a single season. Her favorite hobby, though, is decorating for Christmas. Although the outside of the house gets its share of lights and decorations, it’s the inside of the house that really shines! Last year, there were seven lit and fully decorated Christmas trees, including one upside down tree decked out in red and gold ornaments and one Dr. Seuss themed tree. I share a son, Traber (40), with my first wife, who died at just 29. Traber excelled at computing in school and eventually became the IT Director for an International Rug Company in Long Beach. He was accomplished in karate, earning his black belt at the age of 14. Sonia and I have a son, Ezra (29), who went to Acalanes High School where he played varsity basketball. He graduated from the University of California Berkeley in 2018 with a BA in Psychology. Ezra works for a solar battery sales startup company headquartered in L.A. He is doing very well and says that, believe it or not, there is a lot of psychology in sales. He still plays pickup basketball on the weekends at his gym. Fifteen years ago, I was suffering from Polycystic Kidney Disease. Sonia volunteered to be the donor for my first kidney transplant. The doctors said it was a one in a million shot since she wasn’t even from the same gene pool, but she persisted and it worked, unfortunately, the transplant failed after 5 years. After almost a year on dialysis, Ezra, then only 19, stepped up and gave me a kidney for my second transplant; very brave for a 19-year-old. The transplant, being 50% my genetics, the doctors told me it should last the rest of my life as long as I take reasonably good care of my health. Thank you, Ezra! Last but not least, I still ride horses when I have the chance, scuba dive, build flying model rockets and airplanes, I’m also an avid model railroader running both “HO’ and “O” gauge. I’m seriously into wood working doing everything from completely building and remodeling three homes including the one I currently live in. I love wood turning, such as fancy pens and salad bowels, although I stay away from the diamond point lathe tool these days and haven’t sat on one since 9th grade! |

Highlights of your last 50 years: | Moved to Seattle after graduation from ISU in 1979. Got married, got divorced. Had four kids two boys and two girls. No grands. My oldest is married and lives in Bay Area. The other three are in the Seattle area. I retired in September of 2021 after working as a criminal defense investigator for 17 years. I was done with Seattle, sold my house and moved to a 55 and over active community in Arizona. I am having a blast playing pickle ball, golfing, hiking, playing water volleyball, making stained glass pieces, going to concerts and all around enjoying retirement. I’ve done 3 10k’s and two 1/2 marathons. I recently hiked 100 miles in 100 days…my feet are very unhappy with me but I will carry on. Looking very much forward to seeing everyone in August! |
Share a high school memory: | I got sent to restricted study hall for being late to school too many times….oops. I had to go see Mr. Ritland. I was in my cheerleading uniform and had a bunch of AHS license plates that we were selling for cheer. I informed Mr. Ritland that I wasn’t going to go to restricted study hall…he corrected me and said yeah you are. Well, my sassy 16 year old self stood up to walk out of his office in protest and all of the license plates crashed to the floor…made a racket and Mr. Ritland laughed and I went to restricted study hall as I was told. Mr. Ritland and I became buddies after that! |

Highlights of your last 50 years: | My favorite memories are of the time I spent raising my now 24 year old daughter. Although it was a rough start with my wife Lori passing just 5 months after adopting a 10-month baby girl, I cherish the years I spent raising my daughter Mae. I knew I’d love being a parent, I just didn’t know I’d enjoy the challenge as much as I did. In particular, we share the memories of many trips to the gymnastics gym and to competitions. Mae dropped out just before her Olympic competition training would begin. My career has provided lots of memories as well. My favorite tenures were with some of the Offices of Inspector General at a few federal agencies. I loved putting bad people in jail and the freedom to do quality work. I was struck at times by the size of the frauds that I worked to bring to justice. One great memory was meeting a criminal face to face before he knew I was after him. Another novel memory was during the transition of the Executive Branch. I helped found the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Cyber Security just before President Bush was elected. I was picking up the phone to award a large and important contract when the newly appointed Chief Information Security Officer came into my office, hung up my call, and instructed me that all pending awards were terminated so we could implement President Bush’s mandates. So that is what is meant by “transition!” As many of you may remember, my goal for much of my early years was to be a rock musician. Well my dream was always to play what I now call beautiful music. The Beatles Because is one of my favorites. Especially the a cappella version. When the lead singer informed me the other band members wanted to perform music with simpler harmonies, I came home. I recorded some of the music I composed including Familiar Bay which I was writing just before I left the band. You can hear Familiar Bay at http://songtr.ee/song/2451489/Jeff%20Shearer/Familiar%20Bay. Another song I composed and recorded is From The Night Before. You can hear this at http://songtr.ee/song/2451525/Jeff%20Shearer/From%20the%20Night%20Before. |
