How did the Loving’s Family come about? Research is still in progress to search for more names and dates of our ancestors. For this brief history, we are going to focus on Howard Loving and Ida Johnson Loving’s Family branch.
According to research done by the Late Michael Cox Lucas, the family historian, stated, “Lunsford Loving came from Covesville, Virginia (Albemarle County) by the way of Caroline County, Virginia.” His son, Howard Loving was born in August 1882. He was a Sharecropper in Covesville, Virginia (Albemarle County),
Tandy Johnson was born in April 1855. He was from a small community called Cub Creek; a small town of Tyro, Virginia (Nelson County). His parents were Washington and Rose Hill Johnson.
Jane Hill was born January 1860 in Roseland, Virginia (Nelson County). Her parents were Joshua and Kezziah Turner Hill. Their family was from Tyro, Virginia (Nelson County). There were other siblings in both of their families.
At the age of 21, Howard Loving married Ida Johnson on December 23, 1903 in Nelson County. Ida Johnson Loving was the second child of 13 children born into the Tandy Johnson and Jane Hill Johnson family. She was a Homemaker for the Parrish’s family in Tyro, Virginia. There were other siblings in both of their families.
Howard and Ida Johnson Loving settled in a small home on the Parrish’s Farm in Tyro, Virginia (Nelson County). From this union there were nine children. Namely, Frank George Loving married Camille Smith, Annie Marie Loving married Lazarus Smith, Robert Alexander Loving married Clara Barber, William Chester Loving married Kate Viola Oakcrum, Pauline Julia Loving married Sylvester James Barnett, Laura Loving married John Essex, Susie Loving married Lowell Fisher, Mary Lizzie Loving married Artie Fleming, and Jennie Ann Loving married Burrell Smith.
Note: Fletcher Johnson and Patrick Johnson have two great grandchildren, Michael Cox Lucas and Amanda Porter Hendricks, who participated in the Loving's Descendants Family Reunion 2021 Video Montage (see link below).
We pray that the children of all future generations will pick-up and continue with the Kin2 Howard Loving & Ida Johnson Loving Family Reunion and share newly discovered information and pictures about our family on this website.
African Ancestry DNA Results

Written by Stephanie Loving-Jones, great-granddaughter of Howard Loving:
Back in 2007, I went to the African Ancestry website and ordered DNA testing for my paternal and maternal ancestry. The results of my paternal ancestry showed that the descendants of Howard Loving are the proud descendants of the Balanta People in a region of Africa called Guinea-Bissau Africa. We received an official certificate of our ancestry, a book and a map with a wealth of information about Guinea-Bissau Africa and the Balanta people. Hopefully some of you may still have copies of this material I provided at a previous Loving family reunion.
