York was first born to Charles and Lucille, in Kingstree, SC. He married Rosa Witherspoon (Aunt Missy). They had 11 children. York owned and operated a small farm of cotton and tobacco, on which he taught his family both the value of both education and hard work. He was active in the AME church. Christ first, education, work and honesty were values important to him.
