Any funny stories to share of high school: In Denver this weekend, I ran into a gentleman who had a St. Louis t-shirt on and we immediately asked each other "what high school did you go to?". Having lived in so many places, that's one common theme with the lovely people of St. Louis :).

Juan Alvarez, MD

City: Saint Charles
Tell us about your life since 1975: I graduated from Washington University for my undergraduate degree in Biology and then graduated from The University of Michigan Medical School. I did my internship and residency at The Jewish Hospital at Washington University and then joined my father (for 10 years) in private practice in North St. Louis County. I just retired December 2024 and am enjoying my freedom! I was blessed to have met my beautiful wife Patti while doing research at Jewish Hospital and we have been blessed to have 3 amazing children and now have 3 beautiful grandchildren.
Any funny stories to share of high school: I was going to lunch one day and Mr. Al Burr grabbed my trapezius muscle as he liked to do and said, "Do you want to hear a good joke?". I said "Sure". He said "What do you get if I shot you? A hole in Juan!" The he gave out a big belly laugh. I'm not so sure that a Principle could get away with that these days!
Not funny but fun story. One day after school, me and James Beauchamp Mobis sang "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in the stairwell in our high falsetto because the acoustics were so good. A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh. Another favorite story was when the choir went to Southeast Missouri State to sing and while on the bus we sang "Black Water" in acapella. We sounded so good and had a great time. Miss G was an excellent teach her and she helped me develop confidence in myself. Hard work and believing in yourself pays off.

Also of course Kay Wunder and Jerry Galloway - I was so fortunate to be in Girls Concert Choir where amoung other things got to sing @ Powell Hall with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra not once but both Jr and Sr year. Also of course Jonesy - I wasn't such a great athlete (understatement) but her mentoring and friendship were so important

Any funny stories to share of high school: At the 1975 graduation party, in the woods, on our Barrett Station Road farm, a friendly County Mounty stopped by and ask if he could look around. What could I say, but yes! He walked to the edge of the woods, glance about and radioed to the helicopter flying above, "The whole graduating class of Parkway West is here. Shine your light to let them know we are here, and then go home." He then wagged his finger at me and said, "Have a good life," and drove away.

Had a great career being able to encourage a mentor, both coaches and students throughout my life. Also serve on the Parkway school districts, alumni Association Board of Directors.
Any funny stories to share of high school: I guess one of my favorite funny events in high school was having Perry Young drop me off on one side of a lawn where a party of elderly people were dancing to mood lights and big band (WW2) music in their backyard. I ran to where they were, naked and exposed fully, streaking their party. Well, we had phone books back then, so the next morning my dad abruptly woke me up early Saturday morning, with the owner of the home informing my father I had dropped my wallet in their backyard. I was humiliated picking it up. Heck, maybe that’s the reason the song was written, “They call him the streaker“!
