Jackson Civil Rights Museum Honors Miller Gary Green

In the heart of Downtown Jackson, you’ll find the Greyhound Bus Station, where nine Freedom Riders arrived in May 1961. That summer, over 300 people were arrested for integrating the public transportation system in Jackson. The location has been designated as a historical site with a Freedom Trail Marker to commemorate the protest for Civil Rights.

In July 1961, eighteen year-old Bradfield Family Member Miller Gary Green, was courageous enough to become the first African-American Mississippian to enter the "White Only" entrance of the Jackson Trailways Bus Depot to purchase a ticket to New Orleans. Miller was denied service and instructed to go to the back entrance (for Negroes) for service. Miller and many others were called "Freedom Riders" and were arrested and jailed for "Breach of Peace".

Miller and hundreds of Freedom Riders refused bail with the intention of filling up the jails beyond capacity. The Jackson, Mississippi Freedom Riders served as a flashpoint in the fight for civil rights and overturning racial codes of the South. Miller's Story is chronicled in the Smithsonian Museum, the Martin Luther King Center in Atlanta, Georgia; and the Jackson Civil Rights Museum.
